Every size of Asymmetrical has two codes, and the second is the first reflected in a mirror. 1AS4811 puts the cabinet on the right of whoever sits at the desk; 1AS4812 puts it on the left; nothing else changes, not the top, not the finish, not the price list line. Tecno builds the executive desk this way because the side cabinet is the only thing that touches the floor: the 7 cm (2.75 in) top cantilevers over it and the other end floats, so the desk has a heavy side and a light side, and which side is which decides where the window goes, where the door goes and where the visitor's chair goes. Piero Lissoni drew it in 2006 as an asymmetry to be placed, not just bought; the handedness is written into the code so that nobody has to guess it at delivery.

Beyond the mirror the range is short and exact. Three sizes, 242 × 135, 272 × 200 and 307 × 200 cm (95.3 × 53.25, 107 × 78.75 and 121 × 78.75 in), each 75 cm high, 29.5 in; a black leather pad that is fixed on the basic desk and lifts onto the sockets on the electrified versions; top and cabinet each carry a finish code of their own, fourteen lacquers in matt or gloss and ten veneers, so a walnut top may sit on a lacquered cabinet or the reverse. From the same drawing come the Asymmetrical Meeting conference tables, rectangular to 550 cm (216.5 in), oval and round, and the small Solenoids tables. La Mercanti marks the cabinet side on the office plan while the order is still a draft, because an Asymmetrical delivered the wrong way round cannot be turned.

FAQ

What sizes does the desk come in?
Three: 242 × 135 cm (95.3 × 53.25 in), 272 × 200 cm (107 × 78.75 in) and 307 × 200 cm (121 × 78.75 in), all the same height. The smallest Asymmetrical has a 220 × 95 cm (86.6 × 37.4 in) top; the two larger ones share one top and differ in the depth of the cabinet.
Is the leather pad fixed or does it open?
Both exist. On 1AS4811/12 the pad is fixed; on the versions arranged for electrification it lifts to give access to the sockets below and closes again over them. Tecno also lists Asymmetrical without any pad.
Can the cabinet be locked?
Yes, with the 1ASMAG1500 lock ordered for the cabinet; it is not fitted as standard. On Asymmetrical the lock is a line of its own in the order, like the electrification kit.
Do top and cabinet have to match?
No. Tecno codes the top and the cabinet separately, LO or LL lacquer, LE oak or LS special wood, and lists ten combinations: a wood top on a lacquered cabinet, lacquer on wood, gloss on matt. An Asymmetrical in Canaletto walnut over a Black cabinet is a price-list line, not a special.
Which conference table shares the drawing?
Asymmetrical Meeting, from the same drawing: rectangular tables of 380 × 160, 450 × 180 and 550 × 200 cm (149.5 × 63, 177.25 × 71 and 216.5 × 78.75 in) on two bases of different size, plus ovals and round tables, in the same lacquers and woods as the desk. Executive office and boardroom can be ordered with the same finish codes.

How to order samples for the Asymmetrical desk

Five steps to see the lacquers and woods of Asymmetrical in the office where the desk will stand, before the order line is written.

Pick three lacquer tones, not fourteen
Out of the fourteen colours available for Asymmetrical, three samples are enough; asking for all of them ends in a decision made by delivery date rather than by eye.
Ask for matt and gloss in the same colour
A matt and a gloss sample of one Asymmetrical lacquer, side by side, show what the office lighting will do to the top and to the cabinet.
Put a wood next to a lacquer
If top and cabinet are to differ, the wood sample for the top and the lacquer sample for the cabinet of Asymmetrical are judged together on one table, not in two meetings.
Look at them by daylight and by lamplight
An Asymmetrical sample is checked at the window in the morning and under the office lights in the evening; a Burgundy that reads warm at nine can read brown at six.
Write the codes on the samples
La Mercanti labels each sample with the Tecno code, LO, LL, LE or LS plus colour, so that Asymmetrical is ordered in exactly the finish that lay on the table.
