Among the finishes of Zero the catalogue lists something no veneer chart can match: a top with a customisable image. Not a coloured surface, an image — which turns a designer desk into a place where a brand, a pattern or a commissioned artwork can actually live, at 210 by 90 centimetres.

The rest of the specification supports that freedom rather than limiting it: a self-supporting shell in glass-fibre reinforced thermosetting resin, lacquered gloss or embossed matt, nine catalogue colours and any custom shade quoted by RAL or NCS reference, as on its twin Uno. Designed by Karim Rashid in 2008. La Mercanti specifies it where a desk is expected to be photographed as often as it is used.

FAQ

What does a customisable image on the top actually mean?
It is a finish option listed in the catalogue alongside the colours: the top can carry an image rather than a plain shade. It is decided at specification stage, because it belongs to how the piece is produced rather than to something applied afterwards.
Can the desk be matched to a brand colour?
Yes. Beyond the nine catalogue shades, a custom colour is executed on request by quoting a RAL or NCS reference, which is the same way walls and signage are usually specified.
Is the shell painted plastic?
It is a self-supporting shell in thermosetting resin reinforced with glass fibre, lacquered gloss or embossed matt. The material is the structure, not a coating over a frame.
How big is it, and is there more than one size?
The datasheet gives one size: 210 by 90 centimetres at a height of 75. Zero is a single piece rather than a system of tops and returns.
Who designed it and when?
Karim Rashid, in 2008, for Della Rovere. The same year and the same hand produced its twin project, Uno.

How to specify a designer desk with a customised top

Five steps for a piece that has to carry an identity, not just a finish.

Decide the image before the colour
A customisable top is a production choice. Settle it first, then look at the shades that surround it.
Bring the brand references
Custom colours are quoted by RAL or NCS. Those references travel better than a screen or a printed sample.
Choose gloss or embossed matt
One reflects and sharpens the curve, the other diffuses light. Judge both under the lighting of the actual room.
Check the single size
210 by 90 centimetres, 75 high. Plan the room around one footprint rather than a configurable range.
Agree the artwork format
Resolution, framing and orientation are settled with the manufacturer before the order. La Mercanti carries that exchange in writing.
