Look under Uno and the usual logic is reversed. The chromed iron tripod is not there to hold the desk top up — the moulded shell is self-supporting and needs no help. The tripod carries the box, the storage element that sits beside the user, which is why the metal appears exactly where a piece of furniture, not a plane, has to stand.

The result is a designer desk assembled from three honest parts: a high-density polyurethane shell of 220 by 103 centimetres, a melamine-faced wood box edged in ABS, and three chromed legs, in a custom RAL or NCS colour on request. Designed by Karim Rashid in 2008 and awarded a GOOD DESIGN Award that same year. La Mercanti specifies it where a designer desk is expected to survive close inspection from below as well as from the doorway.

FAQ

What does the tripod actually support?
The box, not the top. The datasheet describes a self-supporting moulded shell and a chromed iron tripod that carries the storage box, so the metal is doing a specific job rather than propping up the desk.
Why is the shell self-supporting?
Because it is moulded in high-density polyurethane as one piece: structure and surface are the same element. That is what allows a 220 centimetre top to work without a frame underneath.
Is the chrome finish visible from the front?
The tripod is in chromed iron and sits under the box, which makes it the only metal in the composition. Against a lacquered shell and a wood-faced box it reads as a deliberate third material.
Can the box be placed on either side?
The configuration is defined by the manufacturer's drawings, which La Mercanti provides with the quotation. Layout questions are answered on the drawing rather than assumed from a catalogue photograph.
How wide and deep is the desk?
220 by 103 centimetres at a height of 75. The depth is unusually generous for a designer desk, and it is what makes room for the box beside the working area.

How to read a desk built from three different parts

Five checks for a piece where shell, box and metal each do a different job.

Find out what carries what
The shell carries itself, the tripod carries the box. Knowing which is which explains the whole design.
Count the materials
Polyurethane, melamine-faced wood, chromed iron. Three materials, three roles.
Look at the joint
Where the box meets the shell is where a moulded desk shows its quality.
Check the depth against the room
103 centimetres is deeper than a standard desk, and the box lives in that depth.
Ask for the drawings
Configuration and orientation come from the manufacturer's drawings. La Mercanti sends them with the quotation.
