Britain has spent two centuries perfecting the garden room, and flooring it has always been the awkward part: what looks right beside the sofa rarely survives beside the door. Time by Barber & Osgerby settles the argument with one colour in two textures. Smooth — R10, pendulum 60 dry — runs under the armchairs; Rough — R11, class C barefoot rating, pendulum 65 dry and 55 wet — steps out onto the frost. Same clay, same tone, no visual break at the threshold, because the unglazed porcelain is frost-proof and its colour sits in the body, not on a glaze.

The London duo drew eight colours named after places — Highland Green, Dover White and Virginia Blue among them — each in three formats: an 8×8 inch field tile, a 1,5×8 inch batten and a 1,5×1,5 inch mosaic, with a matching skirting. Stain resistance is class 5, water absorption 0,06%, chemical resistance class A including household cleaners. Mutina declares the shading honestly too: V2 for Smooth, V3 for Rough — the variation is the design, not a defect to apologise for.

Specify it where an English winter meets an English interior: orangeries, boot rooms, kitchen thresholds that open onto stone-cold mornings. La Mercanti ships the full system from Italy, battens and skirting included, so the garden room finally gets a floor that belongs to both of its worlds.

FAQ

Can Time run from the sitting room straight onto the terrace?
Yes — that is precisely what it was designed to do. The same colour exists in two textures: Smooth for the interior, Rough for the exposed side, and the unglazed porcelain is declared frost-proof with 0,06% water absorption. Because the colour sits in the body of the tile, the threshold reads as one continuous floor rather than two materials meeting.
Which Time texture belongs outside or in a wet room?
Rough: it is declared R11 on the DIN 51130 ramp, class C barefoot on DIN 51097, with pendulum values of 65 dry and 55 wet. Smooth, at R10 and 60/50, is the interior partner. Mutina publishes each figure per texture, so a specifier can split the floor plan by data rather than by guesswork.
How does an unglazed floor cope with tea, wine and muddy boots?
Better than most glazed ones. Stain resistance is class 5, the top of the ISO 10545/14 scale, and chemical resistance class A covers household cleaners. There is no glaze layer to scratch through: surface and body are the same material all the way down. Routine care is simply a porcelain detergent diluted in water.
What formats does the Time collection include?
An 8×8 inch field tile, a 1,5×8 inch batten and a 1,5×1,5 inch mosaic, plus a matching skirting piece. Mutina recommends a 2 mm joint and laying from several boxes; shading is declared V2 for Smooth and V3 for Rough, so the variation across the floor is part of the design.
Can I see Time before specifying it, and where are the certificates?
Samples are available through La Mercanti and their cost is fully credited on order confirmation. Product certificates can be downloaded directly from the article page; standards required by a specific project are confirmed case by case on the manufacturer's documentation, and delivery terms are confirmed in writing at order confirmation.

The garden room floor, solved in five moves

How to carry one Time colour from hearth to frost without a visible seam in the logic.

Walk the threshold first
Stand where inside becomes outside and decide where the texture changes: the door line is the natural switch from Smooth (R10) to Rough (R11, class C). One colour, two duties — mark it on the plan before anything else is chosen.
Pick the colour against the garden, not the sofa
Highland Green beside real planting, Dover White against old brick, Virginia Blue under a grey sky: judge the palette in daylight at the glazing line, because that is where the two worlds will be seen together.
Give the batten the geometry
The 1,5×8 inch batten turns steps, borders and level changes into drawn lines instead of cut compromises, and the 1,5×1,5 mosaic takes the curves. The matching skirting closes the room without a foreign profile.
Order for shading, not just square metres
Smooth is declared V2, Rough V3: ask for the caliber of the production lot, order with a sensible margin, and lay from several boxes so the variation spreads the way Mutina intends it to.
Finish with the right chemistry
A 2 mm joint, cement-based or epoxy grout, and the end-of-works clean that matches the grout you chose. After that, a porcelain detergent is all the maintenance the unglazed surface will ever ask for.
