Tally marks are the oldest interface in the world: four strokes and a fifth across. Michael Anastassiades — trained as a civil engineer before the Royal College of Art — turned that counting system into a building component for Mutina: Tally, an extruded terracotta square of 24×24×10 cm, sliced into longitudinal sections. Wide carries one central line, Narrow four; the outer frame is exactly half the thickness of the inner lines, so however you stack them - horizontally, vertically, mixed - the spacing never stumbles. «A numerical alphabet with a visual dimension», in his words.

The result is a screen wall rather than a wall: partitions up to 4 metres high on the manufacturer's anchoring schemes (two sides up to h250×100 cm, three sides up to h400×300), seven laying schemes, a dedicated solvent-free organic adhesive rated EC 1 plus, and an official installation video. One colour - the natural Argilla of terracotta - declared values to masonry standards (UNI EN 772: absorption 12.5%, frost F1, horizontal loads C2), and a frost-class F2 Outdoor edition from 2025 for courtyards and terraces.

For UK practices it slots where studwork feels heavy-handed: reception thresholds, meeting corners that want daylight, washroom screens with borrowed light. It grew from Fringe - the designer's first ceramic collection for Mutina, here pulled into three dimensions - and took a Hospitality Design Award in Las Vegas for Custom Art + Installations. La Mercanti checks heights against the anchoring schemes, counts the 17.36 bricks per square metre from your elevation, and ships with the VOC A+ and LEED 4.1 papers attached.

FAQ

How tall can a Tally partition go?

Up to 4 metres, following the manufacturer's anchoring schemes: fixed on two sides up to h250×100 cm, on three sides up to h400×300 cm, on two sides up to h400. Every wall must also satisfy the construction standards of the country it stands in - a check La Mercanti runs on your drawings before the order is confirmed.

What is the difference between Tally Wide and Narrow?

Same square, two densities. Wide is split once, down the centre; Narrow four times. Because the outer frame is half the thickness of the inner lines, any combination - stacked, rotated, mixed - keeps a constant rhythm. One colour, Argilla; the pattern comes from how you compose, and seven published laying schemes give you a grammar to start from.

Does Tally work outdoors or in wet rooms?

Indoors - washrooms included, as a screen or dividing panel - the standard collection applies, with declared absorption of 12.5% and a solvent-free sealant. For gardens, courtyards and terraces there is Tally Outdoor (2025), declared frost class F2 under UNI EN 772-22. We match version to exposure on the project, not on the brochure.

Is installing a Tally wall specialist work?

It is tidy work rather than exotic work: bricks bond with Mutina's dedicated organic adhesive (EC 1 plus, solvent-free), drips avoided and any excess removed once dry. The manufacturer publishes an installation video, and La Mercanti sends anchoring schemes and instructions with the delivery for your contractor.

What documentation exists for sustainability review?

A certified VOC A+ emission class, a declared LEED 4.1 contribution of 10%, and HPD, SDS, BPD3 and Declaration of Contents files on request. For projects chasing healthy-materials credits, La Mercanti compiles the pack with the quotation so nothing is chased at submission time.

Filter a reception, screen a meeting corner, rhythm a washroom: Tally divides while daylight keeps moving.
Choose the script
Wide, Narrow or a mix, horizontal or vertical - geometry keeps the spacing constant, the drawing is yours.
Check height against anchoring
Up to 4 m on the manufacturer's schemes, plus local building standards - we verify on your elevation.
