Britain understands bricks. A nation that built itself in clay knows when a humble block has been promoted — and Jali is exactly that: an extruded terracotta brick, drawn by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina, with a circle punched through its heart. What the mid-century called a breeze block returns as a crafted object: one three-dimensional element, 24x24x12 cm, produced artisanally with a declared 3 mm tolerance and a name borrowed from the perforated stone screens of Indian architecture.
The game is in the laying: vertical or horizontal, aligned or staggered, five declared schemes at 17.36 or 34.72 pieces per square metre — the density dial that decides how much light, air and sight pass through. Three colours (natural Neutro, glazed Bianco and Nero over the terracotta body), painted timber profiles to frame a composition, and Interior Design's Best of Year Award 2023 in Architectural Products on the shelf.
Screen walls rise to 4 metres on Mutina's declared anchoring schemes, and since 2025 Jali outdoor carries an F2 severe-exposure frost rating for gardens and terraces. La Mercanti treats each screen as a small work of architecture: scheme, piece count, fixings and a real terracotta sample before anything is ordered.

In spirit, yes — and that is the wit of it. The breeze block logic of filtered light and air returns as an artisanal extruded terracotta element by Patricia Urquiola, with a declared 3 mm tolerance, five official laying schemes and Interior Design's Best of Year 2023 award in Architectural Products. The difference between nostalgia and design is exactly this documentation.
Up to 4 metres, following Mutina's declared anchoring schemes: two sides restrained up to h400 cm, three sides up to h400x300 cm, or two sides up to h250x100 cm, with Fisher SXR 8x80 extended fixings. Structural sign-off stays with your engineer, as the data sheet itself insists. La Mercanti supplies the anchoring schemes and piece counts with the quotation.
Choose the dedicated version: Jali outdoor, drawn in 2025, carries the F2 severe-exposure frost marking under UNI EN 772-22, and its painted timber profiles are outdoor-rated. Rain and frost are accounted for in the classification rather than left to luck. La Mercanti confirms indoor or outdoor specification zone by zone before the order.
Three. Neutro leaves the extruded terracotta natural; Bianco and Nero add a glazed face over the clay body, so the fired edges stay visible and the two materials read together. Colours mix freely within one screen. Judge the tones on a physical sample — La Mercanti sends the real blocks before you commit.
Either 17.36 or 34.72 pieces per square metre, depending on the laying scheme: the first two schemes breathe more, schemes three to five double the density and close the view. Each block weighs 8.20 kg — worth knowing for floors and freight. La Mercanti calculates the exact count on your chosen scheme and prices it line by line.
A short route for architects and contractors: from the first sketch to an anchored, framed, documented screen — the Mutina way.
Reception backdrop, meeting-room filter, garden wall or bench: the task sets the density, the colour and the version — indoor F1 or outdoor F2.
Five declared schemes: 17.36 pieces per square metre for open weaves, 34.72 for denser ones. Vertical or horizontal, aligned or staggered — the same block, very different walls.
Up to 4 metres with two- or three-side restraint per Mutina's schemes and Fisher SXR 8x80 fixings; your structural engineer signs the final numbers.
Painted timber profiles — linear and end, with a removable side for ceiling closures — plus the solvent-free organic sealant. Alternate the laying direction to even out the artisanal tolerances.
Real terracotta samples, piece counts per scheme, weights, UNI EN 772 values and the recycled-content declaration: La Mercanti bundles the file with the quotation.
