Read the wall: V, X, I. The triangular voids of Celosia — Mutina's own catalogue says it — recall the Roman numbering system, so every screen lays out like an inscription whose sequence never repeats. Patricia Urquiola designed the block in 2018 by dismantling the terracotta family — roof tiles, bricks, hollow bricks, lattice screens — and rebuilding it as one sculptural, three-dimensional element.

Each unit is hand-extruded terracotta, 8″×10″×4″, declared with a ±3 mm artisanal tolerance. Screens rise to 4 metres on tested anchoring schemes — certified by Istituto Giordano, staggered installation strictly required — and the system is complete: painted willow profiles, linear and top, plus the dedicated sealant developed by Kerakoll exclusively for Mutina, EC 1 plus rated for emissions. The VOC declaration records zero volatile organic compounds; recycled content is 10% under LEED 4.1.

Use it where a plan needs punctuation rather than walls — reception, meeting corners, breakout areas — and, since 2025, outside: Celosia Outdoor in the Argilla shade carries an F2 «severe exposure» frost rating for gardens and terraces. FAQ

Why do people say the wall looks like Roman numerals?
Because Mutina's own catalogue makes the point: the sequence of triangular voids recalls the Roman numbering system — V, X, I — and since installation is always staggered, each screen composes a slightly different inscription. Nothing is printed; the drawing is the block itself.
How does the system actually go together?
As a kit: hand-extruded blocks, painted willow profiles — linear plus a top profile with a removable side for the ceiling — and the dedicated silane sealant developed by Kerakoll exclusively for Mutina. Anchoring schemes are tested and certified by Istituto Giordano; staggered laying is mandatory.
What height can a Celosia screen reach?
Four metres, provided the right scheme: two-sided anchoring up to h400, three-sided up to 400×300 cm, free-standing partitions up to 250×100. Fixings are specified as Fisher SXR 8×80; structural sign-off follows the building rules of the country of use.
Is there a version for British weather?
Since 2025, yes: Celosia Outdoor, in the Argilla shade, is rated F2 «severe exposure» for frost under UNI EN 772-22, with willow profiles suitable for exterior use — the same drawing, out in the rain.
What are its green credentials?
Declared, not implied: 10% recycled content under LEED 4.1, a VOC declaration recording zero volatile organic compounds, and an EC 1 plus rated sealant. SDS, BPD3 and HPD documents are available on request.

Specifying a screen that reads like an inscription

Five steps to bring Urquiola's numeral-like terracotta blocks into receptions, terraces and courtyards.

Choose its role first
Celosia is punctuation, not partition: it filters sightlines and lets light and air through. Plan it between reception and workspace, café and terrace — and keep acoustic jobs for actual walls.
Fix the anchoring scheme early
Match the opening to the tested schemes — two sides up to h400, three sides up to 400×300 — and bring the structural engineer in before the design freezes.
Specify the full kit
Blocks, linear and top willow profiles, Mutina sealant: the components are designed together, down to the removable side that closes the screen against the ceiling.
Honour the stagger
Staggered laying is a safety requirement and the source of the drawing: offset courses make the triangles run. The producer's installation video walks the crew through it.
Order a sample block
Weight, warmth and the ±3 mm artisanal tolerance are best judged in hand; sample costs are fully credited on order confirmation.
