Britain furnishes with rugs — they zone the room, warm the floor, and fray at the edges. Fringe keeps the first two virtues and deletes the third: ceramic rugs in unglazed porcelain, designed by Michael Anastassiades — the Cypriot-born, London-based designer celebrated for his lighting — as his first collection for Mutina (2023). His words: open plans divide themselves naturally into areas, «a series of perfectly fitted rectangular carpets... the act to follow defined by the fringe around the borders».

The alphabet is minimal and endless: one format, 12.3×12.3 cm, parallel segments engraved in rectified unglazed porcelain, two weights — Thin (6 mm) and Bold (15 mm) — modular with a mandatory 3 mm joint, and 5 colours: White, Anthracite, Grey, Rose, Red. Weave the weights and rotate the orientations and the patterns multiply — the designer's Cahier suggests 17 layouts — while the thick joint, filled with epoxy grout in tone or in contrast, changes the result significantly: the collection's sixth colour.

Where to lay the rug

The rug unrolls everywhere: floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, residential and commercial — receptions, boardrooms, bathrooms and showers (stain class 5, R10, DIN 51097 B, DCOF 0.51 declared), terraces (frost-proof). Datasheet and certificates download from this page.

FAQ

What makes Fringe a rug rather than a tile?
The intention: Anastassiades - London-based, celebrated for lighting design of rare precision - starts from how open plans behave, dividing themselves into areas «as a sequence of activities across the floor», each imagined as a fitted rectangular carpet whose border - the fringe - announces the next act. The collection builds those carpets in porcelain: fields with or without borders, zoning a room without a single wall. Britain has zoned with rugs for centuries; these take footfall, water and decades - and the edges cannot fray.
Thin or Bold - how do the two weights work?
Like typeface weights: Thin (6 mm segments) is the fine, quiet texture; Bold (15 mm) the wide, declarative one - same 12.3×12.3 format, same five colours, modular with each other on the mandatory 3 mm joint. Use them pure or woven, rotating orientations: the designer's Cahier offers 17 ready layouts, from serene (Thin 100%) to syncopated (42/58, 90/10 mixes). Rule of thumb: Thin for large calm fields, Bold for borders, accents and small rooms where the mark must read at a glance.
Does the grout really change the design?
Significantly - Mutina's own word, and the catalogue proves it: Bold White grouted dark blue turns graphic, Anthracite with light blue lights up, Thin Rose with dark red goes textile, Thin Grey with light grey almost vanishes. In tone, the surface reads monolithic and the relief works alone; in contrast, the 3 mm grid becomes drawing. Epoxy grout is the specification - for colour stability and wear resistance - cleaned before it cures. Treat it as the sixth colour of the range: La Mercanti liaises with Mutina's customer care on the grout palette.
Can it take bathrooms, showers and commercial traffic?
With an unusually complete set of declared values: R10, DIN 51097 class B (wet barefoot areas - showers, pool surrounds), DCOF 0.51 and Pendulum 55/40; submerged or sloping zones, where class C would apply, remain the designer's call. The material is full-body unglazed porcelain: 0.06% absorption, Mohs 8, stain class 5, frost-proof - so terraces and outdoor paths too. The epoxy joint completes the case: colour-stable and wear-resistant precisely where water lives.
How do you order a floor with two patterns in a mix?
With rug arithmetic: 65.62 pieces per square metre, 42-piece boxes (0.64 sqm). A 90/10 accent mix over 20 sqm is roughly 1,312 pieces - 1,181 Thin and 131 Bold, which is 29 boxes of Thin and 4 of Bold - so the Cahier's ratios convert straight into order lines, nothing left to site interpretation. La Mercanti runs the count on your chosen layout, adds wastage, and attaches the dossier: 20% pre-consumer recycled declared for LEED 4.1 (2023), ISO 14000/9001 production, EPD and HPD on request. Sample costs fully credited at order confirmation.

Fitting the unfrayable rug: Fringe in five steps

Five steps for UK architects and clients: Anastassiades' first Mutina collection from reception to shower - territories, weights and the sixth colour.

Draw the territories
Start from functions, not walls: conversation, work, circulation. Each area is a Fringe rug, with or without a border.
Choose the weights
Thin for calm extended fields, Bold for borders and accents: the designer's Cahier offers 17 studied layouts to start from.
Pick the sixth colour
Epoxy grout in tone (monolithic surface) or contrast (graphic grid): the result changes significantly - sample first.
Respect the joint
A mandatory 3 mm keeps Thin+Bold modular; draw from several boxes and clean epoxy residues before they cure.
Order by 0.64 sqm boxes
42 pieces per box, 65.62 per square metre: La Mercanti computes quantities per pattern and mix ratios from the layout.
