Bespoke: size, colour, finish

Most tile ranges try to make the grout line disappear. Aurore does the opposite: it makes the joint part of the drawing. Vincent Van Duysen designed the collection for Mutina in 2025 around the memory of children's chalk drawings on pavements — grids of light and dark strokes over a ground that, in his words, «seems to shift and fade over time». A glazed, deliberately non-rectified porcelain stoneware in the historic 20.5×20.5 cm square, with a recommended 2 mm joint that reads as one more pencil line, not as a compromise.

The system is quietly rigorous: four colours — Charcoal, Light Grey, Light Blue, Light Green — each as a solid and in two patterns, Grid S and Grid L, twelve references that combine tone-on-tone or in contrast. The glaze is mixed with micronised glass-ceramics, so the surface is anti-reflective and soft to the touch while keeping declared slip resistance: R11, barefoot class C, DCOF 0.74. Water absorption is 0.07%, stain resistance class 5 — manufacturer data throughout.

One drawing from washroom to terrace

Declared use covers floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, with frost and thermal-shock resistance: an architect can run the same grid from the executive washroom through the reception front to a covered terrace without changing material or palette. Laying advice belongs to the design too — pull tiles from several boxes so the minimal shade variation settles evenly. Product certificates can be downloaded from this page; the specification writes itself around honest numbers.

FAQ

Why is Aurore non-rectified when most design tiles are?
Because the joint is the point. Van Duysen built the collection on the grid of chalk lines, and the non-rectified edge with a recommended 2 mm joint gives the laying pattern the rhythm of the historic 20x20 cement tile. Calibres are declared per production lot (cal 0 and cal 1 - ask in advance), so the joint stays consistent. If a project needs a seamless monolithic surface, this is the wrong collection by design.
Can it be specified for wet barefoot areas - showers, spa floors?
Mutina declares class C to DIN 51097, R11 to DIN 51130 and DCOF 0.74, which is what a specifier needs for barefoot wet zones. The unusual part is how it feels: the glass-ceramic glaze keeps the surface soft to the touch rather than abrasive. Final suitability per room remains the designer's call against the datasheet, which can be downloaded from this page.
Does the grid pattern survive British weather outside?
The declared use is floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, with frost resistance to ISO 10545/12, thermal-shock resistance to ISO 10545/9 and 0.07% water absorption. A courtyard or roof terrace can carry the same drawing as the washrooms inside - one palette across the threshold.
How do the twelve references actually combine on site?
Four colours, each in solid, Grid S and Grid L, combined tone-on-tone or in contrast - Mutina's own boards pair Charcoal with Light Blue Grid L. Two practical habits from the laying advice: mix tiles from several boxes so the V2 shade variation settles naturally, and decide grout colour early because at 2 mm it draws a visible line. La Mercanti prepares combination boards on the actual room plan before you order.
What documentation exists for a LEED or ESG-minded fit-out?
The datasheet declares 20% recycled content under LEED 4.1, with EPD, VOC emission data, Declaration of Contents and SVHC declaration available on request through La Mercanti. Certificates sit on this page as downloads, so the paper trail is ready before the contractor asks for it.

Specifying Aurore without losing the plot (or the joint)

Five steps for architects and facilities teams who want Van Duysen's grid to arrive on site exactly as drawn - from washrooms to the terrace.

Map every surface the grid should own
List floors and walls in one register: washrooms, reception front, break area, covered terrace. Declared indoor-outdoor use means one collection can hold the whole route.
Fix colour first, density second
Choose among Charcoal, Light Grey, Light Blue and Light Green, then decide how much grid: solid for large fields, Grid L for measure, Grid S for density. Tone-on-tone is quiet; contrast is graphic.
Write the numbers into the spec
For wet and barefoot zones, specify the declared values - R11, class C, DCOF 0.74, stain class 5, 0.07% absorption - straight from the datasheet on this page.
Sample under the room's own light
The glass-ceramic glaze is anti-reflective and shifts with raking light, so judge samples in situ. Sample costs are fully credited when the order is confirmed.
Lock lot, joint and logistics with us
2 mm joint, porcelain adhesive, cementitious or epoxy grout, tiles mixed from several boxes, calibre requested per lot: La Mercanti consolidates quantities and delivery with your tiling contractor.
