Trade terms for professionals and design studios

Few studios in London play as seriously as Raw Edges. Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay — Royal College of Art graduates, on Mutina's design team since 2010 with Folded, Tex and Tape — build their work on colour, pattern and what they call playful illusion. Betty (2025) is that philosophy as a tile system: a kit of five modules per colour — one plain, plus T Shape, Plus, Frame and Set — that assemble into grids, webs, mazes and, in the manufacturer's own words, optical illusions.

The name is a family matter: Aunt Betty came back from Brazil in the late seventies with a kitchen whose bold graphic tiles formed «a warm, undulating grid — modern yet nostalgic». The palette keeps that warmth — Blush, Concrete, Night Blue — on a glazed porcelain body built for work: absorption 0.07%, stain class 5, R11 with barefoot class C and DCOF 0.74, frost resistant, declared throughout. Fifteen references, one grammar.

Where the game is worth playing

Floor and wall, indoor and outdoor: washrooms and showers, break areas that deserve a maze, reception fronts, terraces. A 2 mm joint keeps the grid legible; boxes are mixed during laying; calibre is declared per lot. Certificates download from this page.

FAQ

Who are Raw Edges, and why does it matter for a tile?
Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, both born in Tel Aviv, RCA-trained and London-based - on Mutina's design team since 2010, with Folded, Tex and Tape already in the catalogue and collaborations from Vitra to Louis Vuitton behind them. Their signature is colour, pattern and playful illusion, and Betty is that signature made modular: a tile you compose rather than merely choose. Provenance like that is what separates a design system from a decorated square.
How do the four graphic elements actually compose?
Like an alphabet with five letters per colour: the plain tile is the space, T Shape, Plus, Frame and Set are the characters. Run them in lines for grids, alternate them for webs, rotate them for mazes and optical effects - the manufacturer's catalogue names all four games. Random works, planned works better: La Mercanti prepares the laying scheme on your floor plan with quantities per reference, so the tiler executes a drawing, not a hunch.
Is it fit for showers and barefoot wet floors?
Yes by declaration: barefoot class C to DIN 51097, R11 to DIN 51130, DCOF 0.74, with 0.07% absorption and stain class 5. One collection covers the washroom floor, the shower wall and the graphic feature in between. Room-by-room judgement stays with the designer - the datasheet downloads from this page.
Bold colour in a workplace - how does it survive facilities management?
The glaze does the surviving: acids and bases class A, household chemicals class A, stains class 5 - declared values, so Blush stays blush and Night Blue stays night. Care is a porcelain detergent in water. The design risk is managed by dosage, not by avoiding colour: plain fields carry the room, graphic elements concentrate where the eye should linger.
Can the grid continue outdoors, and what supports a LEED submission?
Declared use is indoor and outdoor, floor and wall, frost resistant to ISO 10545/12 - a terrace can carry the same grid as the washroom. Recycled content is declared at 20% under LEED 4.1, with EPD, VOC data and SVHC declaration on request through La Mercanti. Samples are billed and fully credited at order confirmation.

Composing Betty: five modules, no guesswork

Five steps for architects and clients using Raw Edges' kit across washrooms, break areas and terraces - the game planned like a drawing.

Pick the lead colour per zone
Blush warms, Concrete mediates, Night Blue asserts. One lead per zone; the other two stay in reserve for accents.
Set the dose of graphics
Plain fields for large surfaces, T Shape, Plus, Frame and Set where the wall should play - one graphic wall per room is plenty.
Draw the scheme before ordering
Grid, web or maze: compose on the measured plan. La Mercanti turns the drawing into quantities per reference.
Write the numbers into the spec
Class C, R11, DCOF 0.74, stain class 5, absorption 0.07%, frost proof - declared values from the datasheet on this page.
Lock lot and logistics
Calibre declared per lot - ask ahead; mix boxes when laying; keep the 2 mm joint. La Mercanti consolidates quantities and delivery with your contractor.
