Trade terms for professionals and design studios

British workplaces have embraced biophilic design — then discovered that plants need light, water and someone who remembers both. Botanica offers the other route: nature as form, not foliage. Tokujin Yoshioka (2022) drew two organic elements — Seed, a soft hexagonal cell (14×15 cm), and Flower, a five-petal corolla (15×17 cm) — sold exclusively on net, so walls and floors grow an irregular, living tessellation that no grid tile can fake.

The manufacturer calls it the first Mutina mosaic designed specifically for floors, and the finishes divide the work honestly: the wax-matt — «extremely pleasant to the touch» per the catalogue — takes floors with declared R9, DIN 51097 B and DCOF 0.52; the super glossy (declared DCOF 0.31) belongs on walls and dry floors, where light plays on it. Two colours, White and Grey; grout is a design variable — the catalogue pairs White with terracotta, green or cerulean and Grey with electric blue or pink. Stain class 5, class A against acids and even swimming-pool chemicals, frost resistant, 24% recycled content declared.

Where nature works

Floors and walls in continuity, indoor and outdoor: washrooms and wellness rooms, reception backdrops, break areas, covered pool surrounds — right finish in the right place. Laid on perfectly flat, dry substrates with 3 mm joints. Certificates download from this page.

FAQ

What makes this biophilic rather than just decorative?
The geometry itself: Seed and Flower are irregular organic cells that tessellate the way nature does - no two sight-lines repeat - and Yoshioka states the intent in the catalogue: expressing «the beauty of nature in different forms, as if I were painting a landscape», designed for all five senses, touch included via the wax-matt finish. Biophilic design research prizes exactly these irregular natural patterns; Botanica delivers them with zero horticultural maintenance.
How do I split matt and glossy across a project?
By the declared numbers, which are refreshingly honest: wax-matt carries floors - R9, DIN 51097 B, DCOF 0.52; super glossy declares DCOF 0.31, below the wet-floor threshold, so it works walls and dry floors where its light-play earns the spot. Same colour in both finishes lets one room shift texture without shifting palette. Room-by-room sign-off stays with the designer, datasheet from this page.
Does the net format behave on site?
Yes, with the sheet's two disciplines: perfectly flat, dry substrates - a mosaic telegraphs every bump - and grout cleaned off before it dries. Each net covers roughly 0.096 sqm and the organic edges interlock invisibly between sheets, so surfaces run floor-to-wall in continuity, as the manufacturer intends. Five nets per box, 0.48 sqm: ordering maths is simple.
Can it serve a pool or spa area?
Chemically, by explicit declaration: class A resistance to acids, bases and swimming-pool chemicals, 0.2% absorption, stain class 5, frost resistance for outdoor runs. For wet walking surfaces specify the matt (DIN 51097 B, DCOF 0.52) and let the designer confirm each zone; glossy stays on walls. The declared 24% recycled content - the highest in the Mutina range we carry - supports LEED submissions, with EPD and VOC data on request via La Mercanti.
Why does the grout colour matter so much here?
Because a 3 mm joint wraps every single Seed and Flower - proportionally, grout is a second material. Mutina's own catalogue treats it as such, suggesting terracotta, green or cerulean on White and electric blue or pink on Grey. One reference, five moods. La Mercanti prepares grout-colour mock-ups on your actual project; sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.

Nature by the sheet: specifying Botanica

Five steps for architects and workplace teams bringing Yoshioka's organic mosaic into washrooms, wellness rooms and receptions - biophilia with a datasheet.

Pick the organism: Seed or Flower
Seed reads as a quiet cellular field, Flower as a blooming pattern. One geometry per space - they are separate ecosystems.
Cast the finishes by role
Wax-matt for floors (R9, B, DCOF 0.52 declared), super glossy for walls and dry floors. Same colour in two finishes adds depth without new hues.
Choose grout as a colour decision
Terracotta, green or cerulean on White; electric blue or pink on Grey; white or dark grey for calm. Ask for grout mock-ups before ordering.
Prepare the substrate to spec
Perfectly flat and dry, porcelain adhesive, 3 mm joints, grout off before it dries - mosaic rewards discipline.
Order by nets and boxes
Each net ≈ 0.096 sqm, five per box (0.48 sqm): La Mercanti converts room areas into boxes with wastage and coordinates delivery with your contractor.
