Trade terms for professionals and design studios

Most sustainability copy uses words. Arper gives a figure: the shell of Adell is made from 80% post-industrial recycled polypropylene. Eighty per cent is checkable, quotable in a tender and comparable against another chair; "eco-friendly" is none of those things. Post-industrial means the material comes from manufacturing waste rather than from collected consumer waste, which is a different supply chain and a different consistency.

The same visitor chair shell is declared for use indoors and outdoors, on three bases — four painted steel legs, a sled, or four plywood legs with a reconstituted oak finish — and the intended-use sheet cites EN 16139 for non-domestic seating, covering offices, showrooms, public halls, restaurants, canteens, banks and bars. Designed by Lievore + Altherr Désile Park in 2020 and supplied internationally by La Mercanti with the manufacturer's documentation.

FAQ

What does 80% recycled actually cover?
The shell, which is the structural and visible part of the chair rather than a hidden component. The figure is stated by the manufacturer as a product characteristic, so it can be quoted in a specification and verified against the current documentation before a tender closes.
What is post-industrial recycled material?
Material recovered from manufacturing processes rather than from consumer waste collection. It is generally cleaner and more consistent in composition, which matters when it has to carry weight and be seen at the same time.
Does recycled content affect outdoor use?
The manufacturer declares the chair for indoor and outdoor use and provides a separate set of care guidelines for products used outside, covering dirt removal, exposure and off-season storage.
Which standard is cited?
EN 16139, the European standard for furniture strength, durability and safety with requirements for non-domestic seating, with application levels L1 for general use and L2 for severe use.
Where can the chair be used besides a waiting room?
The L1 list covers offices, showrooms, public halls, restaurants, canteens, banks and bars, and the declared outdoor use adds terraces and courtyards.

How to read a recycled-content claim on furniture

Five checks that turn a claim into a specification line.

Ask for a percentage
A number can be compared and quoted; an adjective cannot.
Ask which part it refers to
A shell is not the same as a hidden internal component.
Ask where the material comes from
Post-industrial and post-consumer are different supply chains.
Check it against the standard
Recycled content and structural performance are separate questions.
Request the current documentation
