ICF put four words on the cover of the DuoChair manual: a suspension that breathes. It is a precise claim, not a slogan. On the XMesh version the back is a load-bearing, flexible mesh carried by a technopolymer frame: the membrane itself takes the load and gives way where the body presses, while air passes straight through it. The datasheet is blunt about the consequence — total breathability and air circulation, which is what eight hours in one task chair actually needs.

Two other backs complete the family: Soft, upholstered, and Pad, built in layers with a knitted polyester face over a soft foam core. All three sit on the same die-cast aluminium structure and the same cold-foamed seat, so a building can change register floor by floor without changing chair. The mesh itself comes in four weaves, three of them in post-consumer recycled polyester. La Mercanti supplies the collection internationally, with samples reviewed before the order is confirmed.

FAQ

What makes a mesh back a suspension?
It carries the load rather than covering something that does. On DuoChair the mesh is described as load-bearing and flexible, held by a technopolymer frame, so the membrane deflects where the body presses instead of sitting on a padded panel.
Does mesh really keep you cooler?
The datasheet states that the mesh covering guarantees total breathability and air circulation. In practice that is the reason it is the usual choice for a full working day, and the reason upholstered backs tend to go where chairs are looked at as much as used.
How many mesh types are there?
Four: a two-tone elastic mesh in 70% polyester elastomer and 30% polyester, plus Rhythm, String and Tale. Rhythm and String are 100% post-consumer recycled polyester and Tale is 99%, all GRS certified and compliant with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and EU Ecolabel.
What are the alternatives to mesh?
Soft, with an upholstered back, and Pad, built in layers with knitted polyester over a soft foam core. Both use categories A, B, C and F in 100% recycled polyester, with leather available in category E.
Is the rest of the chair the same across versions?
Yes: the same die-cast aluminium structure, the same cold-foamed seat 5.5 cm thick with a polypropylene insert, the same five-star base and castors. Only the back changes, which is what makes mixing versions across a building straightforward.

How to choose between mesh, upholstery and Pad

Five questions that decide the back, not the colour.

Count the hours in the chair
A full day and a one-hour meeting are different briefs.
Check the room temperature
Mesh moves air; upholstery holds it.
Look at who sees the chair
Backs that are looked at can afford upholstery.
Decide the cleaning regime
Mesh can be washed with water; upholstery cannot.
Order samples of both
A screen flattens mesh more than any other material.
