Measure any office at nine in the morning and the noisiest spot is rarely the open plan: it is the lobby — phones, deliveries, greetings, doors. Funny Sat by IVM Office, designed by Stefano Bigi, is a reception desk built for exactly that room. Its semi-spherical front panel is a thermoformed sandwich of sound-absorbing material: two layers of Trevira CS polyester fabric around a 12 mm fibre core, single-material 100% PET. IVM calls it acoustic correction that is simple and immediate — the panel is the treatment, no ceiling works required.

Behind the curve, the working side is complete: a 30 mm cement-effect desktop with FSC certification, a lockable swivel drawer, a suspended CPU holder, and a lacquered welcome shelf for visitors. The base is a fixed white column or a motorised LINAK lift taking the top from 75 to 115 cm. The whole desk needs 164 cm of frontage; the design is registered at the EUIPO. Across the projects La Mercanti supplies, acoustic budgets usually chase meeting rooms — the entrance, where sound actually gathers, gets furniture that does nothing. This one works for its living.

FAQ

What is the Funny Sat desktop actually made of?
A 30 mm melamine-faced wood-based panel in a cement render effect — the mineral look without the mineral weight. The surface is scratch-proof and anti-reflective, the edges are rounded ABS, and the board carries FSC environmental certification and complies with the UNI standards the manufacturer declares.
How many welcome shelves can Funny Sat take?
Three set-ups exist: no shelf, one shelf, or two. The mounting brackets differ, so the choice is made when ordering — but the side, right or left, is decided at assembly. Each shelf is 18 mm lacquered MDF, 55 cm wide and 30 cm deep: enough for a visitor's folder, badge and phone.
Does the under-desk drawer really rotate?
It does — instead of sliding out, it swings on a metal pin with a black Teflon bushing, with stops in both the open and closed positions. It is 40 mm lacquered MDF, comes in right or left versions, and locks with a key capped in white-coated Zamak. A small mechanism, engineered like a much larger one.
Where does the computer go on a Funny Sat?
Under the top, on a suspended CPU holder: the Slim version adjusts to hold units up to 12 kg and locks with a key; the Big takes up to 15 kg. Nothing sits on the floor, so cables stay off the visitor's sightline and the cleaner's path.
Which colours are available, and can we see them before ordering?
The panel fabric comes in green, orange and sand; shelves and drawer are matt-lacquered in orange, green, sky blue and sand. IVM itself points to physical swatches for true colour judgement — La Mercanti sends them to your office, and their cost is fully credited against the order at confirmation.

Five moves to plan a reception around Funny Sat

From footprint to power socket: a working sequence for facility managers fitting a 164 cm desk into a real entrance.

Draw the 164 by 85 rectangle first
Funny Sat occupies 164 cm of frontage and 85 cm of depth. Tape it on the floor before anything else: if the rectangle blocks a door swing or a fire route, move it now — the desk is freestanding, so the plan is the only constraint.
Face the curve at the entrance axis
The hemisphere is the public face: aim it at the point where visitors actually enter, not at the geometric centre of the room. An off-axis desk reads as an afterthought; an on-axis one organises the space by itself.
Choose the base by counting people
One dedicated receptionist all day? The fixed leg is the simpler machine. A desk shared across shifts, or staff alternating sitting and standing? Specify the motorised column — 75 to 115 cm at the touch of a recessed button.
Route one cable, not five
The motorised version needs a single power feed; monitor and computer live on the working side, with the CPU on its suspended holder. Plan one floor box or wall socket behind the desk and the entrance stays cable-free.
Book the swatches before the deadline
Green, orange and sand read differently under your lighting than in any photograph. Order the physical fabric swatches early, approve them on site, and the finish decision never becomes the item that delays the whole fit-out.
