Every fit-out manager knows the deadlock: the layout is agreed, the glazing is on order, and the site stands still. The W80 partition wall by Tecno — whose Asymmetrical desk Lissoni drew — breaks that sequence. Its profiles are cut directly on site and the snap-fit structure goes up first, defining the skeleton of the layout, while panel closure is postponed to a second phase: the programme moves, decisions can wait, and future reconfigurations are built into the system rather than bolted on.

Behind the schedule-friendly logic sits serious engineering, protected by five industrial patents: a patented technopolymer levelling foot compensates floor-to-ceiling differences, and the whole wall keeps a total thickness of just 80 mm while housing glazing, timber, fabric, wiring and monitors up to 65 inches along the same elevation. Certified sound reduction reaches Rw 48 dB for double-glazed runs and Rw 56 dB for solid walls with sandwich panels. Designed in 2014 by Daniele Del Missier with Elliot Engineering & Consulting and Centro Progetti Tecno, W80 is the partition La Mercanti specifies when the programme is as demanding as the drawing.

FAQ

Can the W80 partition follow a phased fit-out programme?
That is its defining trick: the snap-fit grid of profiles goes up first to fix the layout, and panel closure is postponed to a second phase. Horizontal and vertical profiles are cut to size directly on site, and door jamb heights are set during installation, so late design decisions do not hold the programme hostage.
What acoustic ratings do the W80 doors actually achieve?
Tecno publishes laboratory-tested values for each type: framed double glazed sliding doors reach 31 dB, hinged single glazed doors 34 dB, hinged double glazed doors 37 to 41 dB and solid hinged doors with sound insulation 39 dB, all fitted with a lower acoustic guillotine. A wall is only as quiet as its door, so these figures matter as much as the Rw of the panels.
Is the glazing limited to clear glass?
No. The standard is clear laminated 5+5+0.38 glass, but acoustic 5+5+0.76 and 6+6+0.76 build-ups, tempered 10 and 12 mm panes, low-iron, etched, screen-printed and back-painted glass are available, along with translucent coloured PVB interlayers and switchable LCD glass for instant privacy.
How does W80 handle uneven floors and ceiling deflection?
With a patented technopolymer levelling foot that compensates differences between floor and ceiling, a standard floor profile allowing 25 mm of adjustment and a dedicated ceiling channel for sites with deflection requirements up to 25 mm. Suitable ceilings range from concrete slabs to rigid bandraster metal systems.
What happens to a W80 wall when the office moves on?
It moves with it. The system is designed for easy disassembly and reconfiguration, the materials separate cleanly at end of life, and the product, made of glass and aluminium, is almost completely recyclable, with 97.8% glass in its composition. Installation itself produces no waste on site.

Programming a fit-out around W80, not against it

Five moves that use the two-phase logic of the Tecno partition to keep a commercial fit-out on schedule.

Freeze the grid, not the rooms
Have the profile skeleton installed as soon as the layout is agreed: the made-to-measure modules fix the geometry while finishes stay open.
Let the site do the cutting
Profiles are cut to size on site and door jambs adapt during installation, so survey tolerances stop being a critical path item.
Close panels by priority
Glaze the client-facing meeting rooms first and finish back-of-house runs later: snap fitting makes the second phase fast and clean.
Wire before you close
Route cabling, thermostats and controls into the cavity while the wall is open; they disappear completely once the solid panels click in.
Book the reconfiguration now
Agree with La Mercanti which runs are most likely to move: specifying those junctions today makes the next layout a weekend job.
