Manufacturers rarely name their references. Codutti names two: Cloud, it says, was «inspired by the architecture of great masters such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Carlo Scarpa». Read the desk with those two in mind and it makes sense. From Mies comes the flat, quiet plane of tempered glass over a structure that does nothing more than hold it; from Scarpa comes the other half, the «maniacal attention to detail» in how leather meets wood and how the feet, also in tempered glass, meet the floor. Cloud is what happens when the two are asked to share a room.

Robby Cantarutti and Paolo Martinig drew the collection for Codutti, the Udine maker that has built executive furniture since 1954, and the maker describes it in a sentence about materials, not shapes: «ancient and precious: glass, leather and wood». The single desk is 200 × 100 cm (78 3/4 × 39 3/8 in); with the lateral cabinet it becomes 260 × 210 cm (102 3/8 × 82 5/8 in). Sideboards, two meeting-table lengths, 280 and 420 cm long (110 1/4 in and 165 3/8 in), and three coffee tables complete the floor. La Mercanti quotes it with the two masters left where Codutti put them, on the page, and the desk left to speak for itself in the room.

FAQ

Which parts of Cloud can be covered in leather?
Codutti's wording is broad: every part of the furniture can be upholstered in leather. In practice that means the structure of the desk and of the storage pieces, while the tops stay in tempered glass or wood. Leather-clad structure and glass top is the pairing the maker photographs most.
How big is the modesty panel, and what is it made of?
It is a 1 cm (3/8 in) sheet of HPL. For the 200 cm desk it measures 132 × 37 cm (52 × 14 5/8 in); for the desk with the lateral cabinet it grows to 221 × 47 cm (87 × 18 1/2 in). It is listed as a separate item, so a desk can be ordered with or without it.
What are the three coffee tables for?
They are three sizes of the same idea: 47 × 47 cm (18 1/2 in) and 36 cm (14 1/8 in) high for a single chair, 70 × 70 cm (27 1/2 in) and 120 × 60 cm (47 1/4 × 23 5/8 in) both 46 cm (18 1/8 in) high for a sofa or a pair of armchairs. The taller two share a height, so they can sit side by side.
Is Cloud covered by a warranty?
Yes. Codutti prints «5 years warranteed products» on the cover of its 2025 price list, and the statement applies to Cloud. La Mercanti passes the maker's terms on with the order confirmation; the claim procedure runs through us, not directly with the factory.
Where is Cloud made?
By Codutti Furniture, based in Pasian di Prato near Udine, in north-eastern Italy, with production in nearby Martignacco. The company has made executive furniture since 1954 and groups Cloud in what it calls its Upper Level range.

How to try a Cloud desk before you commit to it

A desk is judged sitting down, not from a photograph. Five steps to see and test Cloud properly, at the factory or on samples, before the order.

Book a viewing of Cloud
La Mercanti arranges for Cloud to be seen at Codutti in Friuli or at a dealer in Europe, whichever is closer to you. Book at least two weeks ahead so that the version you want, glass top or wooden top, is actually on the floor.
Sit behind it, not in front of it
Judge Cloud from the chair: rest your forearms on the top, reach for the edge, check whether your knees meet the structure. Ten minutes seated tell you more than an hour of photographs.
Open a sideboard door
Take the doors of a Cloud sideboard in hand, open and close them several times, put something heavy on the shelf. Moving parts are what decide how a piece feels after a year, and they never show in pictures.
Take the samples home
Structure finish and leather are confirmed on physical samples. Carry them to the office where Cloud will stand and look at them at the hour the room is really used; the cost of the samples is deducted in full when the order is confirmed.
Write it down the same day
Note which top, which finish and which leather you chose and send it to La Mercanti with a photo of the samples. That note becomes the basis of the Cloud quotation, so nothing has to be remembered a month later.
