Look at Siena from the left and from the right and you see two different objects. On one side the top folds down and becomes the structure, a single continuous surface turning through ninety degrees to reach the floor. On the other it is carried by a volume — a pedestal or a return cabinet doing the work a second leg would normally do. The asymmetry is the project of this executive desk, not a variant of it.

That folded side is beech plywood curved in a mould, faced with MDF and finished in saddle leather or lacquer; the same technique shapes the curved parts of pedestal and sideboard. Tops come at 200, 220 and 240 cm by 120 deep, 3 cm thick, in Macassar-type ebony, veined black walnut, saddle leather or lacquer. Designed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba in 2023 and specified through La Mercanti for projects where a desk is expected to survive close inspection.

FAQ

Why does the desk look different from each side?
Because the two sides do different jobs. The manufacturer describes the design as a top that folds on one side to become the structure, while on the other it is supported by a significant volume. One elevation is a continuous curve, the other is a cabinet: specifying Siena means deciding which of the two faces the room.
Can the folded side be placed on the left or on the right?
The composition has a direction, so the orientation is chosen at drawing stage together with the pedestal or sideboard position. It is worth resolving against the door and the window before ordering, since the curved profile is the elevation visitors see first.
What makes the curve possible in a solid looking piece?
The leg is beech plywood curved into a mould, faced with a sheet of MDF and then finished in saddle leather or lacquer. The curved parts of the pedestal and sideboard are built the same way, which is why the radius reads as consistent across the whole composition.
Is there a version for smaller rooms?
Tops are offered at 200, 220 and 240 cm with a depth of 120, and there is a 140 cm top at 80 deep with a leg drawn specifically for that depth. The narrower version is not the same desk cut down: the proportion of the fold changes with it.
Where does the power sit if the top is uninterrupted?
In the sideboard cabinet. One openable box holds a Schuko socket, three universal sockets, two USB in A and C, an HDMI and two RJ45. The working surface stays clear and the cabling stays on the volume side of the composition.

How to specify Siena for an executive office

Five steps that follow the logic of the piece: first the direction of the fold, last the finish.

Decide which elevation faces the room
One side is a continuous curve, the other a cabinet. Establish which one a visitor sees on entering, because that single decision changes the character of the room more than any finish will.
Fix the orientation with the storage
The pedestal or sideboard is structural to the composition, not an accessory. Its position determines the working side and should be set against the door swing at plan stage.
Choose depth before length
120 cm deep for the executive sizes, 80 cm for the narrower top of 140. The leg is drawn differently for each depth, so this choice precedes the choice of length.
Place the power in the cabinet
The electrified box lives in the sideboard. Confirm early which side it sits on, since it determines where a laptop and screen can be used during a meeting.
Compare the blacks on samples
Black saddle leather, black lacquer and black stained beech are three different blacks in the same composition. La Mercanti brings the samples into the room so the comparison happens under the project lighting.
