There is a detail on this desk that works as a signature. On Cartesiano the stitching exists only on the saddle leather version: choose soft leather and the surface arrives without it, by design. Nothing is hidden and nothing is imitated — the seam is the honest mark of one material, and its absence is the honest mark of the other. Specifiers of executive desks who have argued with a client over a sample will recognise how much that clarity is worth.

The rest follows the same logic. Tops and legs are veneered particleboard — veined black walnut among the standard veneers —, or melamine panels covered in saddle leather or leather; the front element can be ordered in New Saint Laurent marble. Tops run 220, 240 and 260 cm at 110 deep, with matching pedestals, return cabinets and storage up to 215 cm high. Designed by Ferruccio Laviani in 2019, Cartesiano reaches international projects through La Mercanti, where the argument is made with samples rather than adjectives.

FAQ

Why does the saddle leather version have stitching and the leather one does not?
Because the two materials are worked differently. The manufacturer specifies stitching on the saddle leather version only; on soft leather it is not offered. It is a deliberate distinction rather than an option list, so a client comparing the two samples is really comparing two different surface languages.
Do the leather panels arrive identical on every desk?
Not exactly, and the manufacturer says so openly: depending on the category of saddle leather selected, the size of its cuts can vary significantly. That variation is a property of a natural material, not a defect, and it is worth explaining to a client before the order rather than at delivery.
Which woods are standard and which need to be requested?
Two veneers are standard: Macassar ebony and veined black walnut, grey stained. Everything beyond those two is available only on request. Knowing the boundary early keeps a specification realistic, because a finish outside the standard range has to be agreed with the manufacturer as part of the project.
Can the storage units reach full room height?
The programme runs from low cabinets at 78 cm through medium units at 97 cm to tall cabinets at 196 and 215 cm, in widths of 171, 227 and 283 cm. That range covers a wall of storage without custom joinery, which matters when a project has to be repeatable across several rooms.
What is fitted into the desk for connectivity?
One box with an openable flap, holding two universal sockets, one Schuko, two USB in A and C format, an audio 3,5, an HDMI and two RJ45. A wired network connection and an external screen are therefore both covered by the standard specification.

How to specify Cartesiano for an executive project

Five steps to take a Cartesiano specification from first sketch to a confirmed order, with the material decisions taken in the right sequence.

Settle the surface language first
Saddle leather with stitching, plain leather without it, veneer, or a marble front element. This choice governs the panel construction underneath and the finish of every companion piece, so it belongs at the start of the process rather than at the end.
Fix the desk size against the room
Three lengths are available at 220, 240 and 260 cm, all 110 cm deep. Measure the room, the door swing and the seated visitor position before choosing, because an executive desk that fills its room reads as a compromise however good the finish.
Position the working side
Pedestal and return cabinet define where the daily work happens. Place them on the side the client actually uses, and check the drawer approach against the chair position rather than against the drawing.
Build the storage wall
Cabinets are available at four heights and three widths. Alternating a closed front with a lower run keeps the elevation readable and avoids the effect of a single continuous block across the whole wall.
Confirm on real samples
Handles, writing pad and modesty panel are the elements the client will touch. La Mercanti works through this final stage with the samples in the room, because a leather category chosen from a photograph is the most common source of disappointment.
