Few makers dare to compare furniture to handwriting. Arper does it in print: Loop's soft elements combine «in short clusters or long, flowing lines as unique and expressive as a signature». The claim survives contact with the product — every Loop modular composition really is written rather than assembled, its line flowing straight, curving, turning corners or closing on itself, so that no two installations need ever sign the same way. Lievore Altherr Molina drew the system in 2009; the Red Dot Product Design Award followed in 2010.

The vocabulary is generous: two- and three-seater sofas that also stand alone in a waiting room, centre and end modules in different sizes, concave and convex corner modules, cushions in two sizes, upholstery in fabrics, leathers and coated fabrics — with a removable version for long service lives. Created for waiting rooms and meeting spaces, at ease in hotels, restaurants and homes: La Mercanti supplies Loop across the UK with fabric samples ahead of the order.

Collection: Loop by Arper — modular system of soft sofa elements for waiting rooms, meeting spaces, lounge and hospitality areas, also as a free-standing home sofa

Designer: Lievore Altherr Molina, 2009

Award: Red Dot Product Design Award, 2010

Free-standing sofas: two-seater and three-seater versions, usable on their own outside any composition

Modular elements: centre modules and end modules in different sizes; corner modules in concave and convex versions

Compositions: countless linear, curved, angular and circular arrangements — from short clusters to long, flowing lines

Upholstery: wide range of fabrics, leathers and coated fabrics; also available in a removable-cover version

Cushions: accessory cushions in two different sizes

Character: graphic in form and silhouette, with an overall effect Arper calls almost architectural — in large spaces the linear form inscribes areas for waiting, resting and meeting; at home it may be compact or commanding

Dimensions: module-by-module drawings and measures come from Arper's technical sheets — La Mercanti attaches them to every quotation

Uses: waiting and reception areas, meeting spaces, lounge and common areas, hospitality and restaurants, home living and home office — and, in projects that call for it, covered open-air lounges proposed by La Mercanti

FAQ

Do corner modules exist, and in which versions?
Yes — the system includes corner modules in both concave and convex versions, which is what lets a Loop line curve towards the room or away from it instead of only turning square corners.
What does the removable version actually offer?
It is a distinct upholstery version of the collection whose covers can be taken off — the option to specify when covers will need cleaning or renewing over a long contract life.
What sizes do the accessory cushions come in?
Two — Arper completes the collection with cushions in two different sizes, used to soften and personalise compositions from a single sofa to a full landscape.
Where do I find exact module measurements?
In Arper's technical sheets, module by module: La Mercanti attaches the relevant drawings and measures to every quotation rather than quoting figures from memory.
Is Loop suitable for a formal boardroom setting?
Arper declares the collection created for waiting rooms and meeting spaces alike — a Loop cluster furnishes the informal meeting corner, while the boardroom table keeps its chairs.

How to hand over a Loop installation to the client

Five steps between the last module and the signed acceptance, for dealers and project managers.

Walk the line against the drawing
Follow the whole Loop composition module by module with the plan in hand — corners and end pieces are where substitutions hide.
Check the seams and alignments
Sight down the line: modules should read as one continuous gesture, with upholstery seams falling where the drawings put them.
Document the upholstery choices
Record fabric or leather references per module in the handover file, so future replacements match the original specification.
Deliver the cushion count
Count both cushion sizes against the order and hand them over formally — loose accessories are the first items to go missing.
Leave the growth path in writing
Note which end modules can be unlocked to extend the composition later, and file it with the project documents.
