Bespoke: size, colour, finish

Niels Diffrient found the answer to lumbar support in a tailor's studio, not in a mechanism catalogue. Clothing designers build three-dimensional shapes out of flat panels of fabric — so the backrest of World LM is cut the same way: three panels of Form Sensing Mesh, joined so that the surface takes on whatever shape is pressed against it. Where a single stretched panel pushes back with one generic curve, the tri-panel back reads the sitter's spine and fits it, as Humanscale puts it, as if it were made just for them. The backrest also pivots, so the fit survives every change of posture.

The rest of the task chair keeps the tailoring lean: 78 components in total, a weight-compensated recline with no tension knobs, and a seat that comes in low-abrasion mesh or contoured foam upholstered in fabrics including Kvadrat's Autumn range. Beyond the task version there are a Meeting edition, whose cylinder returns the seat to its set height, and a counter-height Stool. La Mercanti specifies World LM where an ergonomic task chair has to fit many backs without a fitting session.

FAQ

Why three panels instead of one?
Because one stretched panel can only offer one curve. The three panels of Form Sensing Mesh are cut and joined the way clothing designers build shapes out of flat fabric, so the backrest takes on the exact shape pushed against it — a tailored fit rather than a generic one.
Does the backrest move, or only flex?
Both. The mesh conforms locally, and the whole backrest pivots with the sitter, keeping lumbar contact through posture changes. Recline is weight-compensated: 17 degrees of travel plus 8 degrees of backrest tilt, with no knobs to set.
What holds an armrest that is fixed to the backrest?
The armrests attach to the back of the chair rather than the seat, so they travel with the sitter through the recline. They come fixed, height-adjustable between 183 and 273 mm with Duron pads, or can be omitted entirely.
Which bodies does one specification cover?
Humanscale declares a fit for 95% of the population: statures from 152 to 193 cm and weights from 45.4 to 181.4 kg, on the same chair, without personal tuning.
How long is the warranty?
Twelve years on components and parts, five on fabrics and cushions. The construction behind it is deliberately spare: 78 components against the 200-plus of the average task chair.

How to specify World LM for a project

Five steps from the floor plan to the fabric card.

Map the rooms first
Task chairs at desks, the Meeting version where seats must return to height, Stools at counters.
Settle the seat construction
Low-abrasion mesh or contoured foam: dimensions and height ranges differ between the two.
Fix the armrest policy
Fixed, adjustable or armless — one decision for the whole floor keeps the rows consistent.
Choose frame and textile together
Black or Gray frame; Catena mesh in five colours, or Autumn, Corde 4, Lotus and Brisa on upholstered seats.
Confirm castors per surface
Hard or soft wheels depending on the flooring; the Stool version rides on soft castors.
