Most sofa systems are described by what they can become. Arper describes Steeve by what it is made of: three versatile components — bench, armchair and sofa — plus their relative modules. Naming a bench alongside an armchair changes how a room gets planned: the bench takes the pass-through positions where a sofa would be too committal, the armchair holds a corner on its own, the sofa anchors the group — and central, end and corner modules carry the line onward in linear or corner compositions. Jean-Marie Massaud drew it in 2015; the Architizer A+ Award followed in 2016.

Nine years later the same hand added Steeve Lou: free-standing, fully upholstered, on a single T-leg base, with two- and three-seat versions, a matching ottoman, side tables built into the sofa and a laptop cushion. Steeve offers an external structure in exposed wood or fully upholstered, with coordinated or two-tone configurations; Lou brings new cushioning foams, an ergonomic seat depth and high backrests. From contract lounges and waiting areas to break rooms and homes: La Mercanti supplies both across the UK with fabric samples ahead of the order.

FAQ

How many seats do the free-standing versions have?
Steeve offers free-standing versions with one, two and three seats alongside its modular elements, while Steeve Lou comes as a two-seater or three-seater — so a single collection covers the armchair corner and the full sofa line.
Which shapes can the modular system take?
Linear runs and angled ones: the system includes central, end and corner modules, so a line can extend along a wall or turn to enclose a seating group.
Are the side tables part of the sofa or separate pieces?
On Steeve Lou they are part of the sofa: specific versions come fitted with a right- or left-side table in MDF with a reconstituted oak or walnut finish, so the surface arrives already integrated rather than added later.
Can the upholstery of the frame be replaced?
Yes — on Steeve Lou the frame upholstery is applied without the use of glue, so technical personnel can separate and replace it; the seat and back cushion covers are removable as well.
Which settings does the maker declare these collections for?
Contract applications and residential spaces alike — the refined home or work environment, from lounge and waiting areas to restaurants, break rooms and living rooms.

How to present Steeve and Steeve Lou to a client

Five steps to take a client from the catalogue to a signed configuration without a wasted meeting.

Open with the room, not the sofa
Ask what happens in the space — waiting, meeting, resting — before naming a single component; the answer decides modular or free-standing.
Put the two collections side by side
Show what belongs to each: modular build and exposed wood on one side, T-leg and integrated tables on the other.
Bring the material to the meeting
Order the samples through La Mercanti in advance; upholstery choices made on a screen come back as complaints.
Sketch the layout on the plan
Draw the run with the client watching, marking where it ends and where it turns — the drawing sells better than the render.
Close with what is written
Confirm what the maker declares — parts, finishes, service life of the covers — and leave the rest for the technical sheets.
