Anyone who has specified a two-tone sofa knows the moment: two lovely fabrics, side by side on a desk, and no way of knowing how they will look at three metres in a daylit lobby. Arper removes the guesswork on Shaal by publishing locked combinations — pairings prepared for the bi-material version and named in full: Divina 3 with Vidar 4, Elmosoft with Vidar 4, Synergy with Main Line Flax, Valencia with Fabthirty, Pelle Fiore with Fiord 2. Kvadrat, Camira, Elmo, Spradling, Rubelli: the pairings cross the mills rather than staying inside one book.

Underneath sits a sofa designed by Doshi Levien in 2022, described by the maker as structured and soft like a basket of pillows. A wraparound panel of covered plywood forms the shell, cradles the deep cushions and lifts the whole form off the floor; the cushion covers are removable. The family runs from a two- and three-seater freestanding sofa to end, central and 90° corner modules, a daybed and an ottoman. Beyond lounge use it works as waiting seating, in hospitality and restaurants, in break-out and collaborative areas and in a home office. La Mercanti sets the composition against your plan and follows specification, delivery and installation.

Technical information based on data declared by the manufacturer.

Design: Doshi Levien, 2022, for Arper.

Construction: outer structure made of a wraparound panel in covered plywood; deep inner cushions with removable covers.

Types: freestanding two- and three-seater sofa; modules for composition (left and right end module 1.5 seater, left and right end module 1 seater, central module, 90° corner module); freestanding daybed; ottoman.

Finishes: entirely upholstered in a single material and one colour, or entirely upholstered bi-material in different colours, in specially designed combinations. Materials: fabric, leather, coated fabric or customer's own material. The ottoman is single-material only.

Declared bi-material pairings: Divina 3 with Vidar 4, Elmosoft with Vidar 4, Synergy with Main Line Flax, Valencia with Fabthirty, Pelle Fiore with Fiord 2.

Accessories: decorative cushions in two sizes, intended for the sofa.

Standard: EN 16139 — Furniture, strength, durability and safety, requirements for non-domestic seating. Level L1 general use; level L2 extreme use.

Care: vacuum fabrics on low suction, preferably weekly; dab non-greasy stains with a clean lint-free cloth and warm water, then if needed soapy water (a quarter of a decilitre of soap flakes per litre of hot water, cooled before use) or washing-up liquid (max one teaspoon per litre). Coated fabrics with a microfibre cloth, no alcohol, solvents or abrasives. Keep leather away from direct sunlight and heat sources, blot immediately with absorbent paper and work from the edges inwards. Test any product on a hidden area and wait twenty-four hours.

End of life: separate upholstery and padding, structure and base by material type before disposal.

Applications: lounge and waiting areas, offices, hospitality, contract projects, collaborative spaces, restaurants, break-out areas, residential.

FAQ

What exactly is a locked combination?
A two-fabric pairing prepared by the manufacturer for the bi-material version, listed by name: Divina 3 with Vidar 4, Elmosoft with Vidar 4, Synergy with Main Line Flax, Valencia with Fabthirty, Pelle Fiore with Fiord 2.
Can we still specify a single fabric throughout?
Yes. The single-material, single-colour version covers shell and cushions in the same upholstery, and remains the simplest specification to maintain over the years.
Which mills do the declared pairings come from?
Kvadrat, Camira, Elmo, Spradling and Rubelli, alongside Arper's own Pelle Fiore. The pairings deliberately cross suppliers rather than staying within one collection.
Do the decorative cushions work with every piece?
The documentation restricts them to the sofa. Modules, daybed and ottoman are specified without them.
Can we use our own fabric?
Yes, customer's own material is one of the declared options for shell and cushions, alongside fabric, leather and coated fabric.

How to agree a two-fabric scheme with a client without endless samples

Five steps that turn an open-ended colour conversation into one decision, with the Shaal pairings as the shortlist.

Start from the pairings, not the palette
Put the five declared Shaal combinations on the table first. Five real options decide faster than a hundred hypothetical ones.
Look at the samples in the actual light
Carry them to the room at the hour it is busiest. A pairing that sings in a showroom can go flat under north light.
Decide which surface takes the darker tone
The shell is what people see from across the room; the cushions are what they see when seated. Agree which of the two carries the stronger colour.
Test the maintenance before the aesthetics
Ask the cleaning contractor which of the shortlisted fabrics they would rather look after. Their answer often settles a tie.
Record the choice in writing
Note the pairing and the supplier reference in the order file. In five years' time, when a cushion needs recovering, that line is the whole story.
