Most executive chairs arrive in the maker's palette. Aston can arrive in yours: Arper upholsters the polyurethane shell in fabric, coated fabric, leather — or in the customer's own material, which is how an estate keeps one textile standard from the boardroom to the waiting area without commissioning a bespoke chair.

The rest is specified the same way. Three back heights, low to high, let one design carry a whole floor while still reading as a hierarchy. The base is aluminium: a four-star swivel, optionally with a seat return mechanism that brings the seat back to position, or a five-star version on self-braking castors with gas height adjustment and a synchro mechanism. The shell support and the spring that gives the tilt come in the same finish as the base, so the mechanism reads as line rather than hardware.

Jean-Marie Massaud drew it in 2006 and it is still in production, which for a British specifier is the useful part: replacements and additions come from the same catalogue years later. Arper declares it under EN 16139 at level L1, the general-use band that covers offices, showrooms, public halls, banks and restaurants. La Mercanti supplies Aston with the finish schedule set out before the order, samples included.

FAQ

Can we have Aston covered in our own corporate fabric?
Yes. Arper lists the customer's own material alongside fabric, coated fabric and leather for the polyurethane shell, so a company textile standard can run across the whole specification. Send the reference through La Mercanti and the yardage is confirmed with the manufacturer before the order.
Which base suits a boardroom and which one a desk?
The four-star aluminium swivel keeps a meeting table visually still, and the version with the seat return mechanism brings each seat back to position once the room empties. The five-star base on self-braking castors, with gas height adjustment and a synchro mechanism, is the one for a desk used all day.
Is one chair really allowed in a restaurant and in a boardroom?
Arper declares Aston under EN 16139 at level L1, the general-use band that explicitly covers office buildings, showrooms, public halls, restaurants, canteens, banks and bars. That is the manufacturer's intended-use statement, not a marketing claim.
What do the three back heights actually change?
Presence, mainly. The high back reads as the head of the table, the medium sits comfortably at a desk, the low one keeps a waiting area open. Same design language across all three, so a floor can show a hierarchy without changing chair.
How is the leather version looked after?
Dust it with a soft dry cloth, keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, and blot any stain immediately rather than rubbing it, working from the edge inwards. Arper publishes the full care sheet for fabric, coated fabric, leather and metal; certificates are downloadable from this page.

Specifying one chair for a whole floor

Five decisions that take Aston from the boardroom to the waiting area without a second product code.

Start with the textile, not the model
Fabric, coated fabric, leather or your own material: fixing this first means every back height and every base that follows already matches, and the sample approval happens once.
Give each room its back height
High at the head of the table, medium at the desk, low where people wait. Three heights, one drawing, and the hierarchy reads without anyone explaining it.
Choose the base by how long people sit
Four-star swivel for meetings, five-star on castors with gas lift and synchro where someone works a full day. The seat return version is worth it in rooms that must look composed when empty.
Match the metal to the shell support
The shell support and the tilt spring can take the same finish as the base. Specify them together and the mechanism disappears into the profile instead of announcing itself.
Read the intended-use level before the room list
EN 16139 level L1 covers offices, showrooms, public halls, banks and restaurants. Check the list against your own rooms, and the specification is settled in one pass.
