Most tables are drawn as a top with legs underneath. NoTable is drawn the other way round, around a single component: a cylindrical steel tube, 80 mm in diameter, to which everything else connects. Cast aluminium bases, the footrest beam and the longitudinal bars all arrive at the same column, under tops in oak or American walnut.

That is not a detail for the technical annexe, and here is why it matters: the joints come in two, three and four-way versions at different angles, so the geometry of the room stops being a constraint. A table that has to follow a boardroom with an awkward corner, or grow by a metre when the department does — or rise to standing height on the NoTable HA version —, is assembled from the same catalogue rather than made to measure from scratch. Manufactured by ICF in Vignate, near Milan. La Mercanti works through the configuration with the room plan on the table.

FAQ

Why does the vertical tube matter so much?
Because it is the component every other part connects to. Bases, footrest beams and longitudinal bars all meet at the same 80 mm steel column, so the layout of a table is decided by which joints are specified rather than by a bespoke frame.
What do two, three and four-way joints allow?
They let beams meet at different angles, which is how a table follows a room instead of forcing the room to follow the table. Awkward plans, angled walls and later extensions are handled with catalogue parts.
Can a table be extended after installation?
The system is designed around modular width and length, so adding sectors is a question of specification rather than replacement. We check the exact configuration against the room before quoting anything.
Is steel used anywhere else in the frame?
Yes, in the footrest beam, which is tubular steel finished to match the vertical tube. Aluminium takes over in the bases and in the under-top profiles, where rigidity per kilo matters more.
Where does the whole thing come from?
ICF manufactures in Vignate, just outside Milan. The engineering behind the joints is the part of the product that never appears in a photograph, and it is the part worth asking about.

How to configure a table around a difficult room

Five steps that start with the plan, not the catalogue.

Bring the room plan
Angles, columns and doors decide the geometry before any finish does.
Count the seats you actually need
Then the shape follows, and after that the length.
Choose the joints
Two, three or four-way, at the angles the room requires.
Position the columns
Where the tubes land determines legroom and where cables run.
Confirm before ordering
La Mercanti checks the configuration against the plan with ICF.
