British ears will enjoy the joke buried in the name: DIN is the Deutsches Institut für Normierung — the German standards body — and, as designer Konstantin Grcic cheerfully notes, «in Germany, an A4 sheet of paper is called DIN A4». Naming a tile after a paper standard is exactly his kind of wit: analytical, rational, and quietly funny — because the collection then earns the name with a strictly modular logic: a 15×15 cm square halved gives 7.4×15; halved again, 7.4×7.4; again, 3.6×7.4 — four sizes locking together on a constant 2 mm joint.

Multiply by 8 colours and 2 finishes and you get 64 elements — «from very basic to highly sophisticated», in Grcic's words. The material is glazed pressed ceramic (9 mm) with a declared «slightly mottled effect typical of artisanal products»: sixteen glaze formulas, bell-poured, on bodies pressed in plaster-model moulds. And the standard goes 3D: six special pieces — cubes and bars in every colour — wrap corners, furniture, baths, basins and shelves. EDIDA award 2022; Grcic's CV includes two Compasso d'Oro and work in MoMA's permanent collection.

Where the standard applies

Floor and wall, indoor and outdoor (frost-proof): washrooms, receptions, break areas, terraces — matt for floors (R10, mesh R11/class C, DCOF 0.77), glossy for walls and dry zones. Datasheet and certificates download from this page.

FAQ

Is the DIN name just a gag, or does it mean something?
Both, which is the point: Grcic named the collection after the German standards institute - the body behind DIN A4 paper - and then engineered the tiles to deserve it. The four sizes are generated by halving a 15×15 square, so every format is a fraction of every other and the 2 mm joint always resolves; 8 colours by 2 finishes give a catalogue of exactly 64 standardised elements. It is wit as method: a designer with two Compasso d'Oro awards making a system so rational it can afford to be playful.
How practical is the 3D range for real joinery?
Genuinely transformative: six artisanal pieces - two cubes, two corner sections, two 15 cm bars, in every colour and finish - let you wrap vanity units, bath surrounds, basins and shelves in the same ceramic as the walls, turning bathroom furniture into coherent ceramic objects. Two datasheet disciplines: check the real calibres of delivered pieces before building the substrates (the product is non-rectified), and dry-lay the composition first. Brief the joiner and the tiler together.
Which finish goes where - and what are the slip numbers?
Matt does the working zones, with declared values: R10 in the larger formats, R11 on the mesh formats, DIN 51097 up to class C on mesh, DCOF 0.77 and Pendulum 53 dry/38 wet - floors, wet rooms and, frost resistance included, outdoor terraces. Glossy declares no slip values, so it belongs on walls and dry zones where its bell-poured glazes shine. The two finishes are freely combinable - matt floor, glossy wall, same colour, is the collection's quietest trick.
What is the mottled effect the datasheet declares?
The artisanal signature: every tile shows a solid, slightly mottled colour - declared in the datasheet as typical of artisanal products - born of sixteen glaze formulas applied by the traditional bell technique over bodies pressed in plaster-model moulds. It reads as depth, not defect: colour with a pulse rather than a flat coat. Order several samples to see the range, and use the recommended dry-run to distribute the variation gracefully across the wall.
What documentation supports specification - and what does it honestly not claim?
Declared: stain class 5, chemical class A, frost and thermal-shock resistance, the matt slip package above, and the EDIDA 2022 award; the body is free of VOC and SVHC substances, with EPD, HPD and Red List documents available through La Mercanti. Honestly not claimed: no recycled-content percentage is declared for this collection, so we do not invent one. Care: neutral detergent; fine-grain grout is mandatory on glossy finishes. Sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.

Standardised play: Din in five steps

Five steps for UK architects and clients: Grcic's 64-element system from washroom to terrace - rigorous enough to specify, witty enough to enjoy.

Set the complexity dial
One size, one colour, one finish = rigour. Mixed sizes in one colour = rhythm. The full 64-element game = statement. The system resolves all of them.
Zone the finishes
Matt for floors, wet zones and frost-proof terraces (R10/R11, DCOF 0.77); Glossy for walls and dry areas. Same-colour matt/glossy contrast is the connoisseur's move.
Wrap the volumes
Cubes and bars clad vanities, baths and shelves in the wall's own colour: check real calibres before the joiner builds the carcasses.
Dry-lay first
The datasheet asks for it: compose the sizes on the floor before fixing, slow-setting adhesive, 2 mm joint matching the mesh.
Order in 0.72 sqm boxes
Every format ships at 0.72 sqm per box: La Mercanti converts the laying drawing into boxes with wastage and coordinates delivery.
