Trade terms for professionals and design studios

Specify a pattern and you usually specify a style; specify Chymia and you specify a registered design — no. 007510870-0001/0040, filed 14/01/2020. The black-and-white graphics that Milanese studio Laboratorio Avallone (led by artist Gennaro Avallone, twenty-plus years alongside Mutina) drew for this collection are protected as intellectual property: what goes in the tender is demonstrably original, and demonstrably not a lookalike.

The art is matched by working numbers: rectified glazed porcelain, 30×30 cm, 10 mm, water absorption 0.06%, stain class 5, frost-proof, Robinson heavy use — floor and wall, indoor and outdoor. Eleven textures in White and Black (from the quiet Flat to gestural Drops, Bloom, Juta) plus four Mixes delivered with six different items shuffled in the box; the slight pattern differences between pieces are declared intentional, so no two floors repeat. Slip data per finish: Flat R9/A, textured R10/B, DCOF over 0.59. Recycled content 20%, declared for LEED 4.1.

Where it earns its keep

Reception floors, boardroom walls, washrooms, break areas, terraces. Skirting 3.8×30 completes the spec. Datasheet and certificates download from this page.

FAQ

What does the registered design actually protect - and why should a specifier care?
It protects the artwork itself: Chymia's graphics are filed as registered design no. 007510870-0001/0040 (January 2020), so the pattern named in your specification is legally original and cannot be lawfully imitated by a lookalike range. For tenders where design provenance matters - listed buildings, brand headquarters, design-led fit-outs - that is documentation most tiles simply do not have. Originality here is not a mood; it is a certificate.
Are the pattern variations between tiles controlled or random?
Both, by design: the datasheet declares the slight differences between pieces of the same pattern intentional - a never-repetitive lay - and the four Mixes push further, with six different items shuffled directly in the box. Control comes back at installation: draw tiles alternately from several boxes to balance the tones. The result reads as hand-set variation with industrial consistency underneath - 0.06% absorption and stain class 5 on every piece.
Can the same collection really run from boardroom to terrace?
Per declared values, yes: floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, frost-proof, Robinson heavy use. The one decision is finish-by-zone: Flat is R9/class A - walls and dry floors - while the textured surfaces rate R10/class B with DCOF above 0.59 for working floors and outside. One graphic language, boardroom to terrace, with slip data declared per finish rather than averaged - and skirting 3.8×30 to close the detail.
How disruptive is black-and-white for a workplace, honestly?
Less than a colour, more than beige - and that is the point: black-and-white is the one graphic register that never argues with a brand palette. The range is built to be dosed: Flat as the quiet field, gestural textures (Drops, Bloom, Juta) as accents, Mixes where you want the floor to carry the room. The official pairing with Mutina's Accents paints shows how it calms down or sharpens up. Sample first: the marks vary piece to piece, deliberately.
What are the green credentials and the care regime?
Declared: 20% recycled content (LEED 4.1 declaration, 2024), a production process with zero VOC emissions, a 50-year expected service life and fully recyclable packaging; EPD and HPD via La Mercanti on request. Care is standard porcelain: neutral detergent diluted in water, no acids, alkalis, waxes or sealants. Samples through La Mercanti, with the cost fully credited at order confirmation.

Specifying original artwork underfoot: Chymia in five steps

Five steps for UK architects and workplace teams: Avallone's registered black-and-white porcelain from reception to terrace.

Map the graphic zones
Floor and wall, indoor and outdoor: decide where the black-and-white speaks (reception, break, feature washroom) and where Flat keeps quiet.
Cite the registration
Registered design no. 007510870 in the spec closes the door on value-engineered lookalikes - the pattern is the product.
Match finish to traffic
Flat R9/A for walls and dry areas; textured R10/B, DCOF over 0.59, for working floors and terraces. Always per finish, never averaged.
Plan the shuffle
Mixes come pre-shuffled in the box; draw from several boxes across the floor. Ask La Mercanti for the laying scheme so the randomness lands composed.
Order by boxes
9 pieces per box (0.81 sqm), Mixes 12 (1.08 sqm), skirting by the metre: La Mercanti converts drawings to boxes with wastage and coordinates delivery.
