In most modular sofas the backrest is the last thing added and the first thing that feels loose. Dorothea, LaCividina's lounge system, inverts the order: the sculptural backrest is described by LaCividina as the load-bearing element of the system, wrapping a planar, asymmetric seat rather than resting against it. What looks like a gesture is doing the structural work.
It is also drawn to vary: thinner through the middle, growing in thickness towards the ends, where it closes around the upholstered body. Andrea Steidl designed the collection in 2023 around nine elements — five seats and four backrests — that meet along the tangency of their curves.
Nobody specifies a colony from a photograph. Give us the plan and the way people arrive, and the arrangement comes back from LaCividina with every module named.

Backrest: thinner at the centre, growing in thickness towards the ends, embracing the upholstered body
Modules: nine elements — five seats and four backrests in different sizes — combined beyond linear modularity: following the tangency of their curves, elements gather into colonies that occupy space in more than one direction
Catalogue compositions: from DOR02 to DOR21, in widths of 200, 240, 285 and 325 cm (78.7, 94.5, 112.2 and 128 in) and depths of 94, 100 and 150 cm (37, 39.4 and 59.1 in); every module carries its own code and its own hand, right or left
Structure: solid fir and beech, masonite panel, elastic webbing
Padding: flame-retardant non-deforming polyurethane foam of differentiated densities, polyester fibre
Seams: reinforced with a carbon fibre backing
Frame: reinforced for use in public areas
Exposed woods: natural ash or graphite-stained ash
