Six centimetres for the top and six for the leg, 2⅜ in either way. On Ducale the heavy section runs from the writing surface to the floor, and Estel’s price list names it as the identifying trait before anything else. Walk down the modern office desks on this page and the leg is usually the slender part; here it carries the same 6 cm as the top, so the desk comes across as one block from the door and from the chair.

The leg is veneered, and so is the modesty panel that connects it structurally to the service unit. The top comes in veneer throughout, or with a Pelle Soft strip where the person at work rests their hands, quoted at 40 and 60 cm (15¾ and 23⅝ in) across the 100 cm depth; the visitor’s side stays in wood. Two veneers are offered, Eucalyptus and American Walnut, the latter familiar to anyone who has shortlisted walnut desks. The drawing bears one name, Estel R&D, and no outside signature.

By length the choice is short. 220 × 100 cm (86⅝ × 39⅜ in) is the desk on its own, with its own hatch and cable channel built in. 180, 210 or 270 cm (70⅞, 82⅝ and 106¼ in) are the tops cut for the service unit, 100 or 205 cm long, which keeps cabling and sockets in its service compartment and carries the powered hatch. The unit meets the desk at a right angle in the executive office suite, right or left, and the top passes over it by 30 cm (11¾ in).

La Mercanti writes the 2⅜ in figure on the section of the drawing, so the thickness is read before the desk is unpacked.

FAQ

How much floor does Ducale take once the service unit is in place?

More than the top suggests. Estel’s placement diagrams quote the overall size from the far end of the unit, and the top passes over the unit by 30 cm (11¾ in). With the shorter P100 unit, a 180 or 210 cm top takes 210 or 240 cm in all (82⅝ or 94½ in); with the L205 unit the series runs 210, 240 and 300 cm (82⅝, 94½ and 118⅛ in) for the 180, 210 and 270 tops. The unit itself is 60 cm wide (23⅝ in). Those are the figures to lay on the floor plan, because the price list is explicit that the desk dimensions refer to the tops alone.

Two drawers or a filing rack: what goes inside the Ducale unit?

Either, and the code decides. The P100 unit comes with two drawers as DU040 or DU042, or with a filing cabinet rack as DU044 or DU046; the longer L205 unit repeats the pair, two drawers as DU048 or DU049 and a cabinet filing rack as DU050 or DU051. In every case the pair of codes stands for right and left. The unit is 57 cm high (22½ in) against the 74 cm (29⅛ in) of the desk, and all of them come in Eucalyptus or American Walnut veneer. Which of the two suits the office is a question for the person who will sit there; the price list only fixes what each code contains.

Who put their name to the Ducale design?

Nobody outside the company. Estel credits the design to Estel R&D, the manufacturer’s own development office in Thiene, in the province of Vicenza, and neither the catalogue nor the price list adds an outside designer. When a specification asks for a designer line, the correct entry is Estel R&D and nothing else, which is also how the desk is filed in the Executive & Common Area catalogue, under the Executive & Meeting chapter.

Why does Estel rule microfibre out for the Ducale veneer?

The Product Care sheet does not argue the point, it simply lists it: on veneered surfaces, no microfibre cloths, alongside no acid- or alkali-based products. What it prescribes instead is plain. Everyday dust and spills come off quickly with a dry cloth; heavier dirt takes a soft cloth with a little neutral detergent in water, barely damp so that the wood neither discolours nor swells, and the surface is then rubbed over once it is already dry so that no moisture is left behind. The general page of the same booklet allows microfibre on most Estel materials; the veneer section overrides it.

Which other Estel pieces share the catalogue photograph with Ducale?

Three, and the caption names them: Tulip chairs, Antoni armchairs and Deck storage units, on pages 52 and 53 of the Executive & Common Area catalogue. The same caption describes the desk in the picture as a Ducale with service unit in double finish, leather for the operator and veneer for the visitor, with the modesty panel joining the leg to the unit on which the electrified top access sits. It is the page to send when a client asks what the desk looks like with company around it.

Wiring a Ducale desk: module, cable, technical compartment and top access

Estel’s price list gives Ducale three electrical parts: the socket module in two types, the GC090 cable with its two ends, and the technical compartment in the service unit with the top access above. Five steps to specify them.

Pick the module by its extras

Every Ducale socket module carries 3 Schuko-EU power sockets; what changes is the pair beside them. Type 1, code GC030, adds 2 RJ45 couplers in category 6 for data and telephone. Type 4, code GC036, adds 2 USB charging sockets at 5 V. Both are black, 38 × 6 × 4 cm (15 × 2⅜ × 1⅝ in), and both come with a 220 V female connector fitted with an interlock.

Order the cable, both ends

The GC090 lead is a 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) H05 VV-F power cable that arrives terminated at both ends: a Schuko plug for the wall and a GST 18-3 socket for the connector on the module. Estel lists it as a separate code on the same page as the modules, so it goes on the order as a line of its own.

Give the cables the compartment

The service unit is where the wiring lives. Estel describes a technical compartment inside the unit, designed both for routing the cables and for fitting the power sockets, and the compartment is part of the unit in both sizes, P100 and L205. On a composition with the unit, that is where the module and the cable run.

Find the top access

In the catalogue photograph the electrified top access is on the service unit, not on the desk top: the opening sits above the technical compartment, so the sockets are reached from the unit beside the person at work. The single 220 cm desk is the exception, with its own hatch and cable tray cut into the top.

Ask for the building’s sockets

Schuko-EU is what the price list draws, and it is a continental fitting. The same page states that different international standards can be supplied on request, quoted case by case, so a British office states the socket type at the start and the module is requested in that version.
