On most desks the top and the legs come from different worlds: one is a panel, the other is steel or turned timber. On Kefa, an executive desk by i4Mariani, they are the same object. The leg is a panel 68 cm high and 6 cm thick, built exactly like the top — solid beech edges and crosspieces, honeycomb core, faces in veneer — veined black walnut as standard — or saddle leather or leather. Stand the desk sideways and you would not be able to tell which piece is which.

That decision is what gives the collection its silhouette: two vertical planes and one horizontal, all reading at the same thickness, meeting without a bracket or a visible joint. Tops run 220 and 240 cm at 100 deep, 240 and 260 cm at 120; working height is 74. Designed by Matteo Nunziati in 2017 and inspired, as the catalogue states, by the rationalist architecture of Giuseppe Terragni. La Mercanti supplies drawings and samples to international projects before anything is committed.

FAQ

Why build the leg like the top?
Because the design wants one thickness across the whole desk. Using the same hollow-core construction — solid beech edges, honeycomb core, the same 6 cm section — the vertical and horizontal planes read as one family, with no bracket, apron or metal frame to interrupt them. It is also why the desk photographs well from any angle.
Is a panel leg as stable as a metal frame?
It works differently: instead of a slender structure resisting movement, you have two full-width planes, 100 or 120 cm across, standing on the floor. The manufacturer specifies the panel construction and the assembly, and the installation drawings are available for the technical review of a project.
Can the leg be a different material from the top?
Yes. Both are available in veneer, saddle leather or leather, and the collection also offers a version partly in veneer and partly covered. Matching them gives a monolithic desk; contrasting them makes the structure visible.
What is the working height?
74 cm: a 68 cm leg plus a 6 cm top. It is a centimetre lower than the usual executive standard, which is noticeable when the desk is paired with a chair set for long sessions.
Which documents are available at specification stage?
Datasheets and drawings download directly from the product page; veneer and leather samples are sent on request. Delivery times are confirmed in writing at order confirmation.

How to read the construction of an executive desk

Five checks that separate a designed desk from an assembled one — using Kefa as the worked example.

Compare top and leg in section
If both are panels of the same thickness, the designer decided the silhouette. If the leg is an afterthought in metal, the top was drawn first and the structure added later.
Ask what is inside the panel
Solid beech edges and crosspieces with a honeycomb core keep a large surface flat and liftable. It is the standard route for tops above two metres.
Look at where planes meet
No bracket, no apron, no visible fixing: the joint quality shows at the corner, where the vertical plane meets the horizontal one.
Check the height, not the length
74 cm here. Height decides comfort with a given chair; length only decides presence.
Confirm the finish combination
Veneer, saddle leather, leather or a top split between two of them. La Mercanti sends samples so the combination is judged in the room's own light.
