The Genesis catalogue does not open with a list of pieces. It opens with thirteen rooms, each named after what it is made of: Wengé | Moka | Cream, Glass | White | Gunmetal, Oak | Blue, Wengé | Black | Ochre. Codutti photographs the collection as finished offices, so the buyer reads the wood tone, the leather colour and the top material together before a single dimension, then decides what to change. It is how a managing director actually furnishes a room: from a picture that already works, not from a sample card.

Behind the thirteen rooms is one designer desk system, drawn by the architect Tiziano Dainese with Valuenet associati: polished cast-aluminium legs with three support points each, tops in wengé-dyed or natural oak, 12 mm (1/2 in) tempered glass or hand-stitched thick leather with aluminium corner caps, bridge extensions that replace two legs, mobile extensions on castors, drawer units, bookcases with drop-down doors, cabinets in 45 and 90 cm (17.7 and 35.4 in) modules and meeting tables up to 560 cm (220.5 in); Codutti puts five years of warranty on all of it in the price list. La Mercanti starts every Genesis quotation from one of the thirteen, then swaps one element at a time until the picture is the client's own.

FAQ

What is the polished band that runs across the desk top?
A slim strip of polished aluminium inlaid lengthways in the top. It is there on the wood version and on the leather version, where it joins the four aluminium corner caps; the glass top has a polished edge all round instead.
Can two of the legs be replaced by something structural?
Yes. The bridge extension, 40 mm (1 9/16 in) of veneered wood joined to the sides at 45°, stands in for two legs and takes the desk to 201, 231 or 246 cm (79.1, 90.9 or 96.9 in) wide by 216 cm (85 in) deep, with a chromed steel strip along the base of the sides.
What are the cabinet sides made of if I do not order counter sides?
They come in aluminium colour or black. The veneered counter sides, in wengé or natural oak, are an option that matches the sides to wooden doors; leather and satin-glass doors are usually paired with the standard sides.
How does the visitor chair differ from the executive one?
It keeps the same shell and thick leather but sits on glides instead of castors, or on a fixed tubular frame in chromed steel with a 16 mm (5/8 in) diameter. The executive version has the gas lift, the six-position tilt and the five-star polished aluminium base.
How are the bookcases lit?
Depending on the model, with internal lights that switch on when a door opens, or with external spotlights pointing up or down. Codutti supplies the lights but does not install them: the connection is left to the electrician on site.

How to test a Genesis desk in the showroom before ordering

An hour in front of a Genesis tells more than a catalogue: five things to do at the showroom so the order is placed on what you have touched, not on what you have read.

Sit at both versions of Genesis
Ask for a four-leg Genesis and a bridge version side by side: the first stands anywhere, the second fixes the direction of the desk, and only sitting at both shows which one the office wants.
Lean on the top, then look under it
Rest an elbow on the edge and feel that nothing moves; then look at the cast legs and the leather cable tray from below, because that is the side the visitor never sees and the user sees every day.
Handle the three tops with the same light
Wengé oak, clear glass and stitched leather read differently under the showroom lamps than by a window: take the samples to the daylight before choosing.
Open the drawer unit and the cabinet door
Pull the file drawer to full extension, close it and hear the soft-close; open a 110-degree door on a Genesis cabinet and check the handle in polished aluminium against the door you prefer.
Leave with the codes, not with impressions
Write down SW06 or SN07 for the oak and the Rainbow code of the leather you liked; La Mercanti turns those two codes and the desk size into the Genesis quotation the same day.
