Sedus — maker of the se:vision desk — publishes a number that most chair makers keep to themselves: se:mission has been tested for fifteen years against the company's own quality standards. Not fifteen years on the market — the chair is new — but fifteen years of simulated life before the product reaches a price list. For a specifier that figure answers the only question a boardroom chair really raises: what does it look like at the end of the lease, not on the day it arrives.

Everything else on the data sheet reads the same way. One moulding in glass-fibre reinforced recycled polypropylene holds seat, backrest and armrests together; pocket springs sit in the seat; the DuoMotion mechanism opens to 21 degrees and can be locked upright on request. Three backrest heights — 560 mm (22 in), 710 mm (28 in) and 860 mm (33 7/8 in), codes MI-201 to MI-203 — sit on two bases: four aluminium arms on glides for meeting rooms, visitor and waiting seating, five arms on castors when the chair becomes a management workstation. Seat elevation runs from a fixed central suspension to a gas cartridge or a return mechanism. La Mercanti specifies the chair line by line for British projects, because every surface on it is upholstered separately.

FAQ

Which base should be scheduled for which room?

The four-star aluminium base on glides is the meeting, visitor and waiting version; the five-star base on castors is the one Sedus shows at management workstations. Both carry the same shell and the same three backrests.

What does the GS mark cover on this chair?

TÜV Rheinland LGA Products issued the GS certificate for the se:mission conference swivel chair series to DIN 4573 and DIN EN 16139, with every test carried out up to a user weight of 130 kg (287 lb).

Can each surface carry a different cover?

Yes. The seat cushion, the inner backrest, the outer backrest and the side panels are specified separately, which is how a company colour can be carried on the outside of a chair while the seat stays neutral.

What are the options for castors and glides?

Hard castors for soft floors, soft castors for hard floors, design castors on request, and on the four-star base plastic or felt glides. The choice is made per floor, not per chair.

How wide is the chair?

670 mm (26 3/8 in) on the four-star base and 690 mm (27 1/8 in) on the five-star base, with a seat height of 420-510 mm (16 1/2-20 in). Those are the two numbers a table layout needs.

How to write se:mission into a specification

Five lines to take from the Sedus data sheet, in the order in which they decide the schedule.

Fix the backrest code first

MI-201, MI-202 or MI-203 sets the height of the backrest at 560, 710 or 860 mm; everything else in the schedule follows from that line.

State the base and the elevation together

A four-star base on glides can take a fixed seat height or a return mechanism; a five-star base on castors takes the gas cartridge. Writing one without the other leaves the line open.

Quote the certificate, not the adjective

DIN EN 16139 under the GS mark, with the certificate number and the 130 kg / 287 lb user limit printed on it, is a line a client can check; «contract grade» is not.

Name the four upholstered surfaces

The seat cushion, the inside of the backrest, its outer face and the side panels each take a reference of their own — and the panel may leave the fabric list altogether, in wood or plastic.

Add the lock only if the room needs it

The upright backrest lock is an on-request item on se:mission: it belongs in the schedule as a line, not as an assumption.
