Emeco keeps a short list of the rooms where the Navy is in service, and one of them floats: the Test Kitchen aboard Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages' ship. A design chair that was commissioned in 1944 for warships and submarines — light, non-corrosive, fire-resistant, strong enough to be called torpedo-proof — has gone back to sea, this time with a tasting menu on the table. On dry land the same list runs from the SoHo Diner at the SoHo Grand in New York to the Dempsey Cookhouse in Singapore, and the reason is always the same: a room that turns its seats over all day wants a chair that was designed for something harder than a restaurant.

What made it fit for the deck makes it fit for the bar. The frame is welded into a single piece from 80% recycled aluminium, weighs 3 kg (7 lb), and carries a hand-brushed, anodised surface that Emeco approves for salt air as well as rain. For the dining room there is the chair and the armchair; for the counter and the bar, stools at two seat heights with or without arms; for a children's corner, the Mini. La Mercanti ships the whole series against one order, with the finish, brushed or hand-polished, settled at the order stage rather than at the door. The ship simply proved, eighty years on, that the original brief still holds.

FAQ

Why does Emeco bend the tube before hardening it?
The legs are formed from soft T0 aluminium tube, which bends to a smooth radius inside and out; only after welding does the chair go through a heat treatment that takes the metal to T6, as hard as a bicycle frame. Bending hard tube first, as copies do, leaves the inside of the curve rippled.
Is there a Navy for children?
Yes, the Navy Mini Chair: 39.5 cm wide and 47.5 cm deep (15.5 × 18.75 in), 68.5 cm (27 in) high with the seat at 37.5 cm (14.75 in), 3 kg. It is built the same way as the adult chair and comes in the hand-brushed finish only.
What does the lifetime warranty cover?
Emeco declares a lifetime warranty on its all-aluminium chairs and stools, with an expected life of 150 years, glides excluded. Outdoors it applies to the hand-brushed finish; the hand-polished chair is an indoor piece.
How big is the carbon footprint of one chair?
Emeco publishes 14.88 kg CO2e for the Navy chair, verified with the 2030 Calculator: 84% of it is the energy used in the factory, 15% the materials, 1% the packaging. The counter stool is declared at 12.51 kg.
Can the seat pad be made in our own fabric?
Yes: Emeco accepts customer's own material for the upholstered pad, 0.25 m of fabric or 0.35 m² of leather per seat. The pad's foam and fabrics comply with California's CAL 117 flammability standard; the recycled-PET felt pad is the alternative that needs no fabric at all.

How to replace the glides on a Navy 1006

Emeco's own procedure for swapping the glides on the Navy chair, from a flat-head screwdriver to the last tap of the mallet.

Two tools on the table
Lay the Navy upside down on a table with a towel under it: you need a flat-head screwdriver and a rubber mallet, nothing else.
Tap the old glide out
Set the screwdriver against the square edge of the glide and tap it with the mallet on all four sides in turn, so it backs out evenly; go gently on an original metal glide, which can mark the leg if forced.
Match each glide to its leg
Emeco shapes the glides per leg: the front pair has a rounded corner that matches the leg, the rear pair is angled. Sort them before you start.
Drive the new one home
Push the replacement in and hammer it with the mallet; it is designed as a tight fit, so the plastic may scrape on the ridges, and that is normal.
Order the set for the floor
TPU for all-round and outdoor use, felt-insert glides for hard floors indoors, polycarbonate for carpet, or the original Navy metal glide with a new cap.
