Walk round a Node+ composition and the tallest piece you meet is a backrest: 117 cm (46.1 in) from the floor, its frame filled out with masonite panels. LaCividina lists these pieces as acoustic backrests. We prefer a plainer word for them: walls that arrive with the sofa, in large and small corners of 94 and 184 cm (37 and 72.4 in), sofa backs of 188 cm (74 in) and one rounded corner. Ben van Berkel and UNStudio drew the range in 2021 around an idea the maker states openly, “micro-architectural systems” in which rest, work, privacy and company share a single footprint, sometimes all at once.

Seen as sofas and lounge seating, Node+ is a set of cushioned bases at one height, 42 cm, that is 16.5 in: a 90 × 90 cm square (35.4 × 35.4 in), a 180 × 90 cm oblong (70.9 × 35.4 in), a 180 × 180 cm island (70.9 × 70.9 in), a half island rounded at one end, and finally the luna, shaped as half a disc of 90 × 45 cm (35.4 × 17.7 in). The upholstered backrests stand 72 cm (28.3 in) and may be placed freely on any seat, which is what turns a heap of parts into a modular sofa.

Three names cover the family, sofa, dormeuse and systems, and its extras are easiest to follow by activity. For working: an oak or Fenix shelf and, on request, a USB socket or a power-and-USB one. For shelter: the tall backrests already described and screens on their own base, upholstered or in wood. For company: round tables in natural ash and extra cushions in three sizes. In receptions we plan it beside chairs for visitors, as a place to sit that also shapes the room. La Mercanti sets out on the plan which backs are acoustic and which are upholstered.

FAQ

Who designed the Node+ range for LaCividina, and in which year?

Ben van Berkel with UNStudio, in 2021. That is how LaCividina credits the design on its Node+ pages and on the product sheet, with the studio named alongside the architect rather than in place of him.

Node+ island seat: how much floor does it take up?

The island measures 180 × 180 cm (70.9 × 70.9 in) and carries code 1302 in the price list. Being square at that size, it is the largest of the five seat elements in the collection, ahead of the oblong and the half island.

Can power or USB charging be added to a Node+ layout?

Yes, as an option on request. LaCividina lists two versions: a USB socket, code 1283, and a socket that combines mains power and USB, code 1290. Both are specified at the time of the order.

What supports the upholstery underneath the Node+ seats?

High-density elastic webbing. LaCividina names it among the materials of the structure, together with the solid fir and beech, the beech plywood and the painted steel of the frame beneath the padding.

Is it possible to cover Node+ in leather we supply ourselves?

Yes. The price list accepts customer’s own leather under the abbreviation COL, provided a sample is sent to LaCividina first. Leathers from the LaCividina range remain the alternative.

How to plan the Node+ wood finishes for base, tables and shelves

Three ash tones for the base, natural ash for the round tables, oak or Fenix for the shelves: five steps to keep the timber of a Node+ composition consistent.

Node+ starts with the base colour

Choose the tone of the base first. LaCividina offers it in natural ash, graphite-stained ash or white-stained ash, the same three tones given on the product sheet and in the price list.

Or supply a tint of your own

If none of the three ashes suits the scheme, the base can be finished in a tint chosen by the client. LaCividina lists this as a customisation of the base, separate from the standard tones.

Round tables come in natural ash

The two round tables are made in natural ash: Ø 50 cm and 57 cm high (Ø 19.7 × 22.4 in), or Ø 60 cm and 32 cm high (Ø 23.6 × 12.6 in), under codes 1346 and 1347.

Shelves in oak or Fenix

For the shelves the price list changes material: oak or Fenix, in 140 × 26 cm (55.1 × 10.2 in) or 70 × 26 cm (27.6 × 10.2 in), each 2 cm thick (0.8 in).

Compare them on the finishes file

LaCividina publishes a finishes download next to the technical sheet and the CAD files. Read base, tables and shelves against it together, so the three Node+ timbers are agreed in one pass.
