Measure a sofa the way its maker does and you get two numbers: the width it takes from the room and the width it hands back as seat. On New York by Quinti the two-seater is 210 cm (82.7 in) overall and 190 cm (74.8 in) of seat. The 20 cm (7.9 in) between them is both armrests together. The three-seater runs to 256 cm (100.8 in) for 230 cm (90.6 in) of seat. On the sofas, nine-tenths of the footprint is somewhere to sit.

Within our sofas and lounge seating that ratio is the reason to look at it twice when the wall, not the brief, decides the size. The rest is quiet: an internal frame made entirely of wood with elastic webbing, foams of variable density, seat and back cushions filled with goose feather, four legs in black-painted steel tube of 20 mm (0.79 in). The seat is 65 cm (25.6 in) deep at 42 cm (16.5 in) from the floor and the back stops at 70 cm (27.6 in). Quinti drew it in-house, as Quinti RD, for domestic, residential, office and contract use.

Eleven elements make the family. As sofas and armchairs: armchair, two-seater, the 175 cm (68.9 in) Small, three-seater and pouf. Turned into a modular sofa, it gains an open-ended two-seater, a two-seater closed at the right-hand or the left-hand end, a centre unit and a corner, with a low table on the same base. For waiting areas, next to visitor and reception chairs, every piece can be ordered with fire-retardant foams and the Italian 1IM approval. La Mercanti measures the wall before it quotes the sofa.

FAQ

What are the legs of New York made of?

Steel tube 20 mm (0.79 in) in diameter, painted black: four legs per element, joined by a frame in the same tube. The low table of the collection stands on the same base.

Can New York turn a corner?

Yes. The corner element is 88 × 88 cm (34.6 × 34.6 in), as deep as every other piece, with a 65 cm (25.6 in) seat each way. It links the open-ended two-seaters into an L.

How long is the manufacturer’s guarantee on New York?

Quinti declares six years from delivery, provided the product is used as intended. The statement is printed on the technical data sheet.

Which leathers can New York be upholstered in?

Quinti’s card offers Pelle Premium Up and Elegance, full-grain leathers 1.2-1.4 mm (about 0.05 in) thick tested to EN 1021-1 and 2, and Pelle Seta, an aniline leather of 1.8-2 mm (about 0.07 in). The category 6 leather is the one the price list marks as not feasible on this model.

What is inside a New York sofa, under the upholstery?

A frame made entirely of wood, sprung with elastic webbing. Over it Quinti lays foams of variable density, and on top go the seat and back cushions.

How to clean the leather on a New York sofa

Quinti’s care notes for leather fit into five steps: a white cloth, water and a day of patience. Nothing else touches the hide.

Take a white cloth

The data sheet for New York specifies a white cloth for leather. Keep one aside for the sofa and use it for nothing else.

Dampen it with water only

Water and nothing more: no detergent, no polish, no leather cream unless the tannery’s own sheet says so. The cloth should be damp, not wet.

Try a hidden spot first

Pick a place nobody sees, such as the back near the floor, and wipe a small patch.

Wait 24 hours

Quinti asks for a full day before judging the result. If the patch looks unchanged, carry on.

Wipe the rest, lightly

Work one cushion at a time with the same damp cloth, without rubbing, and let the leather dry in the air.
