On most sofas the storage arrives afterwards and parks itself at one end. On Asso it is written into the order. The side bookcase measures 105 × 22 cm (41″⅜ × 8″⅝) and stands 47 cm (18″½) high, and i4Mariani describes it in a single line: it goes in to replace the armrest. The rear versions do the same to a back — 80 cm (31″½) for an 80 cm seat, 100 cm (39″⅜) for a 100 cm seat.

One sentence, and the drawing changes. A run that ends against a wall can close on a shelf rather than on a padded arm. A composition standing free in a room can turn its back into a low line of titanium-painted steel part-covered in saddle leather, facing whatever lies behind it. Nothing is bolted on afterwards, nothing pushes past the 105 cm (41″⅜) depth the whole family shares, and the schedule stays one line long. The same catalogue also builds a straight run of visitor and reception chairs from single-arm and armless pieces.

Listed as a modular sofa, it is read that way from the first code onwards. Around those modules sits everything else: armchairs of 124 and 144 cm, single-arm pieces at 102 and 122, sofas from 204 to 344, armless centre units, chaise longues, linear chaise longues, two corner units, a plain and a quilted ottoman, and the 40 × 105 cm table module.La Mercanti builds the schedule of codes with you and brings it to the building as one consignment.

When it is the right choice

  • When the seating has to close against a wall and carry books on the same footprint.
  • When a free-standing composition needs a finished back rather than a fabric panel facing the room.

When another solution suits better

  • Seat height is 44 cm, so a coffee point or a high table asks for designer bar stools.
  • The smallest Asso piece is a 124 cm armchair, so for single movable seats see design chairs.

FAQ

Can a bookcase and an armrest sit on the same side?

No: the module is ordered in place of the arm, not next to it. i4Mariani lists the side bookcase as a 105 × 22 cm unit that replaces the armrest, and the rear versions as 80 or 100 cm units that replace the corresponding back. That is why the seating element itself has to be specified in its armless or single-arm version wherever a shelf is planned.

How many seat widths does the system use?

Two, and only two: 80 cm and 100 cm. Every code in the i4Mariani list states how many seats an element carries and which of the two widths it uses — two 80 cm seats, three 100 cm seats, and so on. Depth, overall height and seat height never move, so pieces ordered years apart still line up.

Is Asso offered in fabric as well as leather?

Both are listed, and the catalogue also shows a mixed reading it calls the textile proposal: base and ottoman in leather, upholstered volumes in fabric. Covers are removable on the seat and back cushions only, which is worth writing into a specification for a space that will be cleaned often.

What holds the seat up underneath the upholstery?

A timber frame. The manufacturer declares solid poplar heartwood seasoned naturally for at least three years, with poplar plywood elements and dap joints made with cylindrical dowels. Elastic polypropylene and natural latex belts carry the suspension, and the frame is padded with CFC-free polyurethane foam before any cover goes on.

Which pieces let a run of seating stop without an arm?

The armless centre units at 160 and 200 cm, together with the left and right single-arm pieces from 102 to 322 cm. Used together they let a bench of seating follow a wall and finish where the architecture finishes, rather than where a pair of arms happens to fall.

How an Asso composition arrives and how to plan the route in

Asso is delivered as separate elements, never as one sofa. Five checks to make before the vehicle is booked.

List the pieces, not the sofa

Work from the schedule of Asso codes rather than from the rendering. A corner composition is several elements — seats, a corner unit, perhaps a bookcase and a table module — and each of them travels as its own package.

Measure the tightest point of the route

Every Asso seating element is 105 cm deep and 86 cm tall. Compare those two figures with the narrowest door, the lift car and the turn on the landing, and mark where a piece will have to be carried on edge.

Agree who lifts on the day

Corner units reach 245 × 169 cm, so the largest single item is wider than a doorway. Confirm in writing how many people will be on site and whether the building allows access outside working hours.

Protect the finished surfaces

Bookcase and table modules are part-covered in saddle leather and painted in titanium colour. Keep them wrapped until the seating is in position, because they are the parts that meet walls and trolleys on the way in.

Set the base before anything else

Place and level the seating elements first, then add the bookcase or the table module on the side ordered for it. Getting the base right removes every alignment problem that would otherwise appear later.
