Graphic, spatial, complete: the concepts of Antti Kotilainen

Antti Kotilainen, Finnish designer, author of the Seela chair for Lapalma

Most furniture studios stop at the object. The Helsinki office of Antti Kotilainen, founded in 1997, states a wider brief: furniture and product design, but also complete visual concepts that bind graphic and spatial design into one coherent whole. It is a rare combination — the same hand that refines a chair also composes the identity of the room around it — and it explains why houses from Martela to Knoll have kept his number since 1993, and why his work reads as one language across scales.

For Lapalma that language became Seela (2018), the meeting-room chair La Mercanti proposes on British projects where boardroom, breakout and lobby are meant to speak with one accent.
